INTRODUCTION TO KAYAKING Part 2 (3 Hours - Sand & Water)
This is a two-part course with Part 1 taught on land only (via Zoom), and Part 2 on the sand and water. Students must have proof of full COVID-19 vaccination, effective prior to the Part 2 on-water date. STUDENTS MUST REGISTER FOR BOTH PARTS 1 AND 2, and complete Part 1 before taking Part 2. After completing both Parts 1 & 2, participants will have the opportunity to pass the NSYC Kayak Paddle, Swim, Capsize and Assisted Rescue assessment, which is required to use any NSYC Kayak equipment. Kayak, paddle, and PFD are provided by NSYC.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Learn basic paddle strokes, turns, stops, essential equipment and gear care, including the paddle, PFD and kayak features. Participants will practice basic kayaking skills and receive information about water safety, assessing conditions and paddling on Lake Michigan.

Course cost for Part 2 is included in Part 1. Pre-registration is required. Classes are taught by NSYC Instructors who have been certified by the American Canoe Association.

Kayaking classes are open to NSYC Full and Paddle Members ages 13 and older.  Children 13 to 17 must take the class with an adult member. Participants must have the ability to swim in open waters.

SEE YOU ON THE WATER!

What to Wear & Bring to class:
Part 1 Zoom:  (90 Minutes) Dress in comfortable clothing.

Part 2:  (3 Hours) Bring a water bottle, sunhat and if you wear glasses or sunglasses, be sure they are secured using an eyeglass retention strap or Croakie. Bring proof of COVID-19 vaccination.
It is usually much cooler near the lake and always cooler on the water. Early season classes can be cold!
  • Wear only SYNTHETIC fabrics, no cotton and no open shoes (e.g. NO sandals, flip flops or bare feet).
  • Water shoes or old gym shoes work well.
  • Students must wear a Type III, US Coast Guard approved personal flotation device (PFD – life jacket) Students should have their own for proper fit, but NSYC has a limited supply of shared PFDs for student use if you want to wait before purchasing your own.
  • Be prepared to get wet and swim!
  • Layers of synthetic, snug fitting clothing work best and allow you to adjust to beach vs water temperatures and also to dry quickly.  Bring a fleece jacket, just in case.
  • Always bring a towel & a change of clothing; it's nice to leave in dry clothes after class.
