Welcome Back Letter!

Happy New Year Learning Gate Families!

We hope you had an enjoyable and safe winter break with family and friends.   2015 promises to be an exciting year at Learning Gate Community School.  Casino Night and Eco-fest are just a few of the events we have scheduled, with many more in the planning stages.

There are plenty of volunteer opportunities available in the upcoming months, you can contact Michele Northrup at michelen@learninggate.org to find right place for your talents.

We also have a variety of new parenting classes being offered:

  • College Prep Seminar
  • Dive into History- Ocean Science Fun For All
  • The Growing Classroom- Intensive On Garden Based Learning just to name a few!

The dates for all these fantastic events are in the side panel of this newsletter and in our online school event calendar.

The U.S. Green Building Council selected Learning Gate as one of their recipient schools for 2014 Best Environmental Efforts in Schools Across the U.S.   We are so proud to be nationally recognized for following the vision and mission statement of our school.

Learning Gate Vision: “Tomorrow’s leaders engaging in and contributing to an educated, sustainable world.”
Learning Gate Mission: “To promote academic excellence, community service and environmental responsibility through family and community partnerships.”

It is our honor to continue to provide our students with a quality education that allows each child to develop successfully educationally, emotionally and socially. A large part of our success is due to the cooperation and involvement of our families and community. We thank you for your help!

Sincerely,

Learning Gate Administration

Pond Cleanup Success!

You may have noticed that the pond in the front of the school (behind the kindergarten building) is looking a LOT cleaner.  Thanks to the hard work of a dedicated band of volunteers and our 5th & 6th grade students, we were able to clean out a lot of the invasive Salvinia plant.  Most people think it is Duckweed but it's not.  The Salvinia covered the entire pond smothering the animals and keeping our native aquatic plants (like water lilies) from growing.  Once the Salvina was removed we planted native pond plants such as water lilies, pickerel weed and bulrush.  Keep an eye on this pond in the coming few years to see how it changes for the better.  Already, we have seen more birds such as little blue herons and even a few ducks using the pond!

If you are feeling disappointed that you did not get to participate, we will probably be having annual pond cleanup days to keep the Salvinia from coming back.

Click the menu below to access the January menu. Please order at least two days in advance.

Attention Pasco County Families!

It is that time of year! The Pasco County School District website                (www.pasco.k12.fl.us) is accepting requests for Out of County Releases for the 2015-2016 school year. You can access the information website and application here. Remember, this paperwork needs to be completed for each student for each year that a student attends a Hillsborough County school. Our goal this year is to have all the required paperwork for returning students completed prior to the end of this school year.  Please don't forget to forward a copy of the Release form as well as the corresponding Application to Enter a Hillsborough County School (available in the front office) to Donna Brynjolfsson at donna@learninggate.org at the Hanna Campus or Kellie Human at khuman@learninggate.org for 7th and 8th grades.
