Heron's Heroes - Summer & River Wylie

We are happy to introduce River and Summer Wylie, the Oct/Nov Learning Gate Heron’s Heroes of the month. River and Summer have attended Learning Gate Community School since they were in preschool. As 6th graders, one of the things they enjoy the most is changing classes throughout the day. When Summer reflects back on their time at Learning Gate she says that the best part is “everyone is your friend, and there are no fights and bullying like you hear about at other schools”. Both River and Summer are excellent students who have straight A’s in their classes.

River loves creative writing and has been doing it for 2 years. Last year he participated in the film club after school program and he also appeared in "Dolphin Tale" with his sister. By being in the movie, River was most excited about learning a different way of telling stories through film. He enjoys working on collaborative novels with his friends and right now he is working with 6 of his friends on Skype on a novel about zodiac symbols. The characters in the story embody different zodiac characteristics. River is always looking to share his love of creative writing with his fellow students.

Summer is an actress, author, and advocate for her peers. She is a conscientious student who was elected Student Council President by her peers this month. When Summer was asked about the victory she said she was surprised to win but she is very excited about being able to make a difference by improving the experience of her fellow students. Summer’s acting career began at the age of 2 when she appeared in a Little Tykes commercial. She enjoyed that experience and went on to do another commercial for Friendly’s at age 6. She began working with an acting coach at age 8. And at the age of 12, River and Summer were selected to be extras for the film "Dolphin Tale". They enjoyed the experience so much that Summer intends to continue pursuing her acting career as well as excelling in academics. She recently auditioned for a TV show and she plans to apply to an IB program in Land O Lakes for High School. Her goal is to attend Stanford to study Journalism or Law.

River and Summer both attribute their success to a supportive family. They dedicate time each week to their personal goals and their family has a good balance of fun, work, and cooperation to ensure everyone in the family has the opportunity to shine.  Summer and River are enthusiastic about learning and pursuing their creative talents. They are inspiring Heron’s Heroes.

Heron Hike Fun Run Pledge Forms Are Here!

It's time to Fire Up Those Feet! The Heron Hike Fun Run is coming on November 21st. Before your students take to the track we hope you will consider pledging for them to run laps to benefit the new school playground, teacher and student mini grants, and a host of other programs sponsored by the PTSA. We encourage you to pledge in one of two ways:

Online form is available by clicking here

Paper printable form is available by clicking here.

We hope you will help us to give all of our students an incentive to do their best during the fun run to benefit Learning Gate Community School! We also encourage you to allow your family and friends to pledge on behalf of your children as well by emailing them the form links so they can make their own pledges.

If you would like to volunteer or if you have questions please contact Donna Peachey at

Lost and Found

"Reuniting Your Children With Their Stuff"

Please remind your children regularly to check the lost and found and the bins. There's lots of things that need to be reclaimed!

We would REALLY like to encourage parents to label EVERYTHING - last name is better than just a first name, but first and last name are best for hopes of return of lost items.  We are g
etting lots more jackets and sweatshirts now that the temperature has started dropping in the mornings.

Sometimes items are left behind by parent volunteers and we also occasionally get items from the Florida campus.  Please check often.

We still  have a pair of almost new black Skechers that are a size Small. They likely belong to a kindergartener or first grade girl. There are also still many unclaimed rain ponchos.

Volunteers: We Need YOU!

Take a look at some of the uniquely "Learning Gate" invitations and Save the Dates that we sent! This is a one of a kind, invitation only event, but if you know someone who would be a good fit to attend this event, please email gardenparty@learninggate.org

Donors Choose News!

Ms. Calcaterra - This Book Worms Project is intended to provide reading supplies for Ms. Calcaterra's classroom to prepare her students for the District Battle of The Books Competition. Your donation will help her prepare her students not only for the competition but for a lifetime of loving reading! She wants to provide her students with Standard Magnetic Dry-Erase Whiteboard Easels that double as writing boards and flip charts. Read all about her donation project and donate here.

Ms. Jessica - The Got Books (Primary) donor project focuses on primary students (K-2nd). Through the collections of leveled readers I have requested, my young students will be able to develop their skills in decoding and fluency. After learning and recognizing sound patterns in words, my students will be able to experience discovering those patterns through authentic experiences in literature with these books. In addition, each child in my small group will be able to have their own book to read, follow along as their peers read, or follow along as they listen to the accompanying CD. Read all about her donation project and donate here

Fall Festival Needs Your Throwaways!

Our Homeroom Parents are busily preparing for all kinds of fantastic activities for their class booths. We have a need to collect some commonly thrown away items to ensure our booths are well stocked to allow all visitors to participate. Please send donations in a bag with the teacher's name written on it. Remember the LG Fall Festival will happen November 8th, RAIN OR SHINE!

Ms. Alyson - Needs plastic bottle caps, all colors accepted. From soda, milk bottles, water bottles, etc.

Ms. Kara - Needs paper towel and toilet paper rolls. As many as you can donate!

7th Graders - Need cardboard boxes similar to cereal or cracker boxes. It's okay to flatten them. A box will be on the office porch or bring to the office.
