Landslides are the leading natural hazard behind pipeline loss of containment events in the 21st century. And in nearly every case, the warning signs were there—sometimes for decades. This presentation provides a practical, straightforward approach based on the newly released API RP 1187, designed to help pipeline operators and consultants identify areas prone to landslides, evaluate the threat to pipeline integrity, and reduce the risk of failure before it happens. We’ll look at how an integrated approach of geomorphic review using LiDAR and other technologies combined with ILI data produces the optimal method to identify and assess landslide hazards.
Through real-world case studies, we’ll explore incidents where landslides impacted pipelines—and how these failures likely could have been avoided through following the API RP 1187 methodology.
