We will start our day with a guided tour of Sloss Furnaces. The tour consists of an educational film and touring the site to learn about the raw ingredients, how the furnace worked, the importance of Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham's iron and steel industry and what it was like to be a worker during production. Students will experience the site by visiting the underground stock tunnel where the ingredients were loaded in the blast furnace, the blower engine room that dates back to the 1890's, and the base of the blast furnace to see where the molten hot iron flowed for 90 years. Our next stop is the Vulcan Park & Museum. Home of the world's largest cast iron statue. We will have lunch in the park before we start our "Anything is Possible" interactive, guided tour of the museum. The rich history of Vulcan will be brought to life in this interactive, educational, and entertaining experience that is set in the Vulcan Center Museum and guided by two actors who portray characters in their historical context. Students will encounter figures such as Vulcan’s creator, Giuseppi Moretti, civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr., and other various local historical figures. After our tour we will have free time to further explore the park and museum.
