Welcome to the Citizens for Forest Health Brigade
"Watershed Health"

August Field Day!

Thank you for working with us this summer!  We are still going strong with our action-packed season with a lot of great opportunities for you to spend time in the woods, make new friends and gain valuable skills to better understand how to create healthier, more resilient forests.

The day's theme will be "Watershed Health", which has become extremely relevant to the health of the Southern San Juan forests and the human communities that call them home.  Fire risk, wildlife habitat, water quality and timber resources are all pieces to this ever-growing complex puzzle that will continue to be a dominant theme in developing strategies to promote resilient forests.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES
  • Birds of the Forest Tour:  The Weminuche Audubon Society will be joining us in the morning for an educational walk through the woods to learn the birds we have in our forests!  We are very excited to have the opportunity to work with these great naturalists and look forward to seeing you there.  Coffee will be provided!  Meet at the Pagosa Springs Public Library at 7 am to shuttle over to the site

  • Expert Speaker:  We are excited to be joined by local expert speakers who have dedicated their professional lives to understanding the San Juan watersheds that support both natural and human communities.  Come hear them talk about what a watershed is, why they are important and how our regional activities are trying to make them stronger, healthier and better prepared in a changing climate.

DIRECTIONS TO PAGOSA SPRINGS PUBLIC LIBRARY:
From HW 160 turn south on 8th street.  The library is on the corner.

DIRECTIONS TO THE FOREST MONITORING SITE:
For those who would prefer to meet at 9:00 am for the forest health monitoring portion of the field day, please meet us at the monitoring location.  From Main Street (HW 160), head north on N. 5th street which becomes 4 Mile Road.  Continue on 4 Mile Road for approximately 9 miles and veer left on to FS Road 634- DO NOT GO TOWARDS THE 4 MILE TRAILHEAD!  Continue for another 1.5 miles and look for cars parked in a turnout on your left.  We will be waiting for you there!

We will be spending all day outside and as you know the weather in the San Juans can be unpredictable, so please come prepared with the following gear:
  • Water bottle
