Recognizing & Addressing Trauma In Our P-12 Schools

Our school counselors see the effects of students' trauma every day. This interactive workshop will address trauma-informed approaches to understanding and addressing students' academic and behavioral concerns. Participants will be able to model (and advocate for) approaches to discipline that include empathy, calm, and connection. We will also discuss introductory phases of helping students with regulation and processing. 

Program Objectives: Participants Will Be Able to - 
Obj a: Identify signs and symptoms of trauma presented in their students.
Obj b: Identify various approaches to address trauma in student populations.
Obj c: Implement interventions around emotion regulation and processing.

About the Presenter:
Guy Ilagan teaches graduate students in The Citadel’s Counselor Education Programs. He has practiced counseling in a variety of community and educational settings. Guy has published several studies on counselor effectiveness and the mental health effects of wilderness backpacking. He also provides trainings on trauma-informed practices and basic and intermediate suicide prevention for counselors, educators, and social workers in Belize. Guy’s research has been published in the Journal of American College Health, Journal of College Student Psychotherapy, Journal of Adventure Education & Outdoor Learning, Research in Outdoor Education, and The Mentor: Innovative Scholarship on Academic Advising. He also has a small private practice in Charleston, SC where he provides clinical supervision and counseling.
