Ethical & Collaborative Care for Families in Litigation
Presenters: Christi S. Zerega, LPC & Melissa Simondi, J.D., Legal Research, Analysis, & Writing Professor

July 16, 2024 | 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM | 1 Ethics CE

Counseling a minor whose parents are engaged in litigation over custody or divorce is the most common scenario in which a Counselor receives a complaint against their license per SC LLR. Navigating this situation can be very tricky, but not impossible! This is a FREE Ethics CE event for SCCA Members, and low-cost for Non-Members, we are honored to host two incredible advocates.

SCCA Members - FREE
LPCA/Student Non-Members - $5
Professional Non-Members - $10

*This presentation will be a basic overview of ethical considerations that could arise while working with families in litigation. SCCA nor presenters will provide legal guidance or advice on specific scenarios; participants are encouraged to contact ACA or their liability insurance provider with specific cases. The opinions expressed in this presentation do not reflect any licensing or credentialing body.*

Program Objectives - Participants Will Be Able to:
a) Identify ethical considerations when counseling a minor or other family members navigating litigation.
b) Understand the role of a Guardian Ad Litem in the therapeutic space.
c) Learn how to be a "positive advocate" for clients and the family system.

About the Presenters:
Melissa Simondi is a family law attorney practicing in Charleston, SC. She also teaches at the Charleston School of Law and serves as a Guardian Ad Litem in her spare time. Melissa works closely with LPCs for families in litigation, including Christi Zerega! Christi is a LPC practicing in Mt. Pleasant, SC who specializes in parent-child relationships and working with families navigating custodial issues. Together they will present on common ethical concerns when counseling families in litigation, why the collaborative model is best practice, and how counselors and the law can work together to support families across SC.
