ABOUT SAGE MAINE SYMPOSIUM 2019
Building Strong, Healthy Community Together

SAGE MAINE offers this one day Symposium to provide the LGBTQ people of Maine and surrounding areas with an opportunity to gather together to work on issues which have been identified by our members as topics that they would like to discuss.

Together we will learn how to identify and address the unique concerns and needs of LGBTQ older adults. We will work to develop comprehensive action plans to become healthier, happier and safer in our homes, our communities, and our broader environments. As we celebrate the accomplishments that we have made since Stonewall, we will also examine the threats that face us on a national level. We know that LGBTQ older adults in Maine fear that they will experience discrimination in elder services, loneliness and unmet needs regarding their personal care.

We will explore several themes: caregiving, social isolation, LGBTQ health, the importance of developing relationships, creating age-friendly communities through the friends helping friends model of interpersonal support, and community engagement.  We will hear from Maine’s Governor Janet Mills and Senator Angus King as well as a lawyer from GLAD speaking on judicial issues. We welcome Jessica Mauer, Executive Director of the Maine State Council on Aging and many other experts leading workshops who will provide us with next steps to accomplishing our goals.

And we will take time to meet new LGBTQ people from around the state and enjoy entertainment with the unique celebration of music celebrating STONEWALL 50.

Scholarships available: Please email SAGE for Scholarship request (info@sagemaine.org).

SAGE stands proudly with the LGBT pioneers across Maine who’ve been fighting for decades for their right to live with dignity and respect.
