PENNSYLVANIA STATE SOCIETY OF RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGISTS TECHNIBOWL COMPETITION
Educators please encourage your students to participate in the Techn-bowl.

Each team must pre-register for the Techni-bowl.  The application to participate is on the PSRT website at www.psrtonline.org.   The PSRT is asking for a picture of the team and a picture or logo of the school the team represents to psrtonline@gmail.com.

Competition Rules
Purpose:
To promote student enthusiasm and demonstrate knowledge of the study of radiologic technology.
Eligibility:
Participating schools of radiologic technology must have accreditation in good standing with an accrediting agency recognized by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
Each team must consist of two student members from the same program and in their last year of that program, as determined by the chairperson or program director, who are not registered technologists. Students are not permitted to compete more than once during their education.  Each school is also strongly advised to have one alternate team member. The alternate must also be a student from the same program. A maximum of two teams from each program may participate. A $50.00 registration fee must be submitted for each team participating at the time of registration. Teams will submit, to the general judges, the application form along with program faculty signature and registration fee.
Each team is also advised to have a current faculty member or program official accompany them to the competition to serve as a team representative.
All members of the team must be a registered student PSRT member and must have registered to attend the meeting at the student attendee rate.
Team members (including alternate) must be formally registered 15 minutes in advance of the start of the formal competition. Any team not present and registered by the start of the scheduled competition must forfeit.
Competition Questions:
The competition will consist of thirty questions. All questions will be of the multiple choice style and will have only one correct answer. All questions will be referenced with reputable, current, and relevant sources. To ensure the integrity of Techni-Bowl, competition questions will be selected by a qualified and current educator in the radiologic sciences.
Question breakdown will be as follows:
Radiation Protection 7 questions
Equipment Operation 4 questions
Image Production & Evaluation 7 questions
Radiographic Procedures 8 questions
Patient Care and Education 4 questions
Questions will be read by a moderator. A computerized response system will determine correct answers, track response time, and team scores.
Format:
Thirty questions will be asked. Each question with its choice of answers will be read by the moderator once as it is simultaneously projected onto a screen. If the overhead projector fails the questions and answers will be read aloud twice but will not be viewed.
Teams will provide responses to questions via an electronic hand-held response system. Each team of two will have their own response unit. Teams will be given 10 seconds after the reading of the question is complete to provide an answer. Answers will not be accepted after the 10 second time period. A computerized response system will determine correct answers, track response time, and team scores.
Use of the computerized response system will be formally reviewed with all teams prior to the start of the competition. Two sample questions will be given so team participants have the opportunity to try the computerized response systems. Teams will be given the opportunity to ask questions about use of the computerized response system prior to the beginning of formal competition. Once formal completion begins, a team’s failure to properly use the computerized monitoring system to answer questions will render the team’s answer as incorrect.
If the computerized response system is not available, an alternative system of providing a response will be determined by the committee with instruction and practice for all competitors.
Team members are not permitted to communicate in any manner with any individual except each other. Teams that violate this rule will immediately be dismissed from the competition. The total number of teams that answer questions correctly will be flashed on the overhead screen after each question. Each team that answered the question correctly will raise their hand so the audience can track team performances. In the event of electrical or technical difficulties, a pencil and note card system of answering will be employed.
Two sample questions will be read prior to the start of competition so competing teams understand the question format, response system, and the time interval.
Teams will receive 1 point for each question answered correctly and zero points for incorrect answers, erroneous answers, or failure to answer. Should a tie occur at the end of the thirty questions, additional questions will be asked in a sudden death fashion only to the teams involved in the tie until just one team remains. Teams will use a pencil and paper system for scoring in the event of a tie.
Expectations
All participants, spectators, educators, and technologists are expected to display proper decorum, civility, professionalism, and good sportsmanship at all times. Any individual who is disruptive and/or violates this code will be removed from the competition upon the judges’ decision and may be barred from further attendance.
Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in competition rooms and persons with alcoholic beverages in their possession, or who appear to be intoxicated upon the judges’ decision, will be considered disruptive and will be barred from the competition.
All electronic devices (cell phones, pagers, blue tooths, cameras, etc) must be turned off and stowed during competition. Any participant who is found to be using an electronic device of any type during the competition will be immediately dismissed from the competition along with the entire team from that program.
Audience participation is prohibited.
Judges decisions are final.
Objections to competition questions and procedures, including judges’ decisions, are prohibited during the competition. After the competition, a formal written objection to any question may be filed with one of the co-chairs of the committee. The objection must be submitted in writing on an appeals form by a program official only within five minutes of the conclusion of the competition. The program official must provide a current source (i.e Radiologic Technology textbook, workbook etc. with a current edition in the past 5 years) for the appeal process.
Judging and Moderating:
General Judges
Two general judges oversee all aspects of the Technibowl including team registration, monitoring team and spectator performance and behavior during the competition, score verification. The general judges may consult with the moderator regarding for any matter.
Moderator
The moderator (President of PSRT or designated appointee) will read the competition questions. If requested by a general judge, the moderator may provide counsel regarding team and spectator performance and behavior or any other matter.
Awards
Awards will be decided by the Pennsylvania State Society of Radiologic Technologists (PSRT) and will be identified when initial notification of Technibowl is disseminated by the PSRT. The first-place team will be awarded the PSRT Technibowl “Cup” which is a traveling trophy that the winning team will possess for one year. The program director of the winning team is responsible for the safe keeping and safe return of the trophy to the Technibowl Committee one month prior to the next year’s Technibowl Competition. The winning team will also receive an award plaque to be permanently displayed at their school/institution.
Students participating in the competition must attend both days of the state meeting and the business meeting to be considered for any/all prizes. If winners are not present the prizes will be forfeited to the next eligible student.
Winners will be announced at the conclusion of the meeting on the 2nd day of the conference
