The View from Atop a Colossus

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is one of the fastest-growing, most aggressive, innovative and honored health-care organizations in America.  For our March meeting in the Year of the Woman, we'll meet the women who runs CHOP,  Madeline Bell, its president and CEO.  She runs a $3.2-billion system with 16,000 employees, based in University City but sprawling across the region and indeed the world.  Bell began her career at CHOP in 1983 as a nurse.  After a stint as a hospital administrator elsewhere she returned in 1995 and was named CEO in 2015.  She's spearheaded expansion of CHOP's ambulatory care network as well as a building boom on the main campus, while encouraging ground-breaking research into cancer, sickle cell and other diseases. Named the Philadelphia Business Journal's Most Admired CEO, she's deputy chair of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia and on the board of Comcast. 

Bolstering our Year of the Woman theme, Bell will be interviewed by Maiken Scott, the host and executive producer of The Pulse, WHYY's health and science program and podcast which is heard on public radio stations across America.  A Temple grad and native of Germany, Scott is a much-decorated health care journalist who has been with WHYY more than 20 years.
