All people, irrespective of their sexuality or gender identity, want to pursue the dream of more leisure, freedom, and a sense of enjoyment in retirement. But the road traveled by LGBT people to reach that destination is often different from that taken by straight people. Family structure, support networks, and career choices continue to vary between LGBT people and heterosexuals, which impacts how they plan for and live their lives in retirement.
We plan to address this important topic during a presentation to be given at the PFLAG meeting in Falmouth on Tuesday, April 24th with Michaela Herlihy, CFP® of Beacon Financial Planning of Cape Cod, Inc., a local, fee-only financial planning firm. The presentation will be from 7:00-7:45 pm and will be followed by a support meeting until 8:30 pm for those interested.
We hope this presentation will lead to a greater shared understanding of the differences between LGBTQ people and straight people in their retirement preparations, and raise awareness about some of the changes that are necessary to create a more inclusive environment based on principles of equality.
