About the Speaker
Scarlett K. vonThenen has worked at the California State Council on Developmental Disabilities (SCDD), Orange County Office, since 2007. She provides training, technical assistance, capacity-building, benefits planning, and systems change advocacy for self-advocates and families in Orange County. She serves on the Orange County Child Care Planning Development Council as a public agency representative and the SVUSD Community Advisory Committee, as well as an active committee member in numerous other interagency collaboratives within Orange County. She has 22 years’ experience working with persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities focused on systems change advocacy that improves equity and access in areas of healthcare, education, employment, and public benefits. She is a certified work incentives practitioner and benefits specialist.  She has helped persons with disabilities, and their circle of support, with the entire Social Security Disability Benefits process, from completing an initial SSI/Title II application, overpayment waivers,  to representation at administrative hearings appealing denial of benefits. Prior to her role at SCDD, she worked at Regional Center of Orange County and at a local community based organization providing in-home independent living skills services to persons with developmental disabilities.
