Topics of discussion:

  • Researching the opportunities at the state, county and municipal levels for appointment to Boards and Commissions.
  • Review of the application process and guidance on strategic networking, including the importance of endorsements, how to get letters and phone calls of recommendation.
  • What boards and commissions do at various levels, and why they are important to policy decision-makers.
  • Building a better resume for later elected and appointed offices.
Panelists:

Elmy Bermejo:  Elmy Bermejo recently served as a Senior Advisor and Outreach Director for Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis, the first woman ever elected to this position in California. She previously served in President Barack Obama’s Administration as the Regional Representative for the Secretary of Labor in the Western United States and as Director of Intergovernmental Affairs in Washington D.C. 

Charlotte "Char" Bland:  Char is the Past Chair of the City of Pasadena Commission on the Status of Women, 6 years leading efforts to increase awareness for pay equity, homelessness, women veterans, human trafficking, and other quality of life issues for women.   Past Vice President of The Association of California Commissions for Women, championing an effort to ensure that a women's commission exists in every County or City and that they are fully funded, permanent, and independent Government entities that give California women a voice.  In 2019 -2020, she was the Candidate for City of Pasadena City Council, and was endorsed for her candidacy by US Vice President Kamala Harris.

Mary Ann Lutz:  Mary Ann recently served as Government Liaison/Policy Advisor to Congresswoman Grace F. Napolitano. She is the former Mayor of Monrovia first elected as Mayor of the City of Monrovia in 2009 and re-elected 2011 and 2013.  She served as a Monrovia City Council Member from 2003-2009.
