Brushy Creek - Class I Trip, March 16th (9:30am)
Leader: Kenny Pevahouse (256) 684-5656
Meet at Warrior Mountain Trading Post in Wren, Al. (intersection of Hwy. 36 & Hwy 33) at 9:30am.
Description: We will do some quick grab and go and head to Brushy Lake Campground. Pull into the day use portion (parking is $3 for day use). You can also camp here, but not sure about bathrooms. Expect a long, full day as the trip will take about five hours. Take out at 4pm.
Additional Info: Beauty abounds, you may want a camera. The creek is characterized as easy flow with occasional bumpy shoals and maybe some downfall to portage around. First is a classic Bankhead ridge in hemlock forest, we will explore a bit here. Two waterfalls along the way, first is Coal Mine Falls. A short up and down trail leads to this strikingly beautiful falls complete with a blue hole. After some lazy paddling, the next falls down the creek is Sougahoagdee Falls (Sue Falls). Another short hike to this big and photogenic amphitheater. The takeout is a pain, but that is what wilderness is. Off to the steakhouse afterwards!!
