What is funny in Saudi Arabia?
In 2011, when Yaser Bakr first started experimenting with his stand-up routine, there was not a single comedy club in his home country of Saudi Arabia. Undeterred, Yaser opened AlComedy Club in 2012. Now, he, along with Shakir Sharif and Khalid Khalifa, are regulars on the stage at AlComedy Club and leaders in their country's burgeoning comedy scene. As part of the trio's five-city U.S. tour, they are taking a break from performing to discuss the challenges they've faced in bringing stand up to Saudi Arabia, how they've been influenced by comedy in the West, and how they have mastered the challenge of performing in a cross-cultural context.
Shakir Sharif, Khalid Khalifa, and Yaser Bakr are Saudi comedians who have performed alone and together in Jeddah and around the world. After a career in marketing, Yaser Bakr stumbled upon his gift for comedy while doing a stand-up routine at a friend’s party. He went on to found Saudi Arabia’s first comedy club, in Jeddah, where he is both the manager and a regular performer. His passion for nurturing young comedic talent at A1 Comedy club has earned him the title ‘father of Saudi comedy’. He is known for his satire and observational humor on every day life. Shakir Sharif first made his comedy deput as a writer on the hot Youtube show, Esh Elly. He now performs internationally, and has become a well-known comedywriter and actor on a number of Youtube shows, including one of his own creation. He is known for his celebrity impressions. Khalid Khalifa began his comedy career while living in Sacramento, CA, as part of Laughs Unlimited. He has since taken his act global, performing over eighty shows throughout the Gulf region, including at the first every stand up show in Yemen. He is known for his podcast, which shares life in Saudi Arabia with the English-speaking world.
