Laura Searcy MN, APRN, PPCNP-BC, FAANPPediatric Nurse Practitioner, Marietta Neonatology
Chair of the Board, Cobb Community Alliance to Prevent Substance Abuse
2017-2018 President, National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners The emergence, increased availability, social acceptability and attractiveness of a variety of novel nicotine-containing tobacco products presents a vast public health challenge.
Any use of products containing nicotine by youth is unsafe. Nicotine is highly addictive, especially during teen years when the developing brain is very vulnerable.
Recent statistics reveal the majority of middle schoolers, high school youth, and their parents are unaware of the nicotine content in most vaping products... and every JUUL product.
Research indicates the secondary reinforcing effect of nicotine use in teens can lead not only to other tobacco product use including combustible cigarettes but also to other substance misuse, as well as reducing their ability to take pleasure from other activities in the absence of nicotine.
This session will examine current trends in youth nicotine use and inform parents on how to address the risks associated with these trends in their families, schools, and communities.
We will >
- Review the growing variety of nicotine delivery products and devices commonly used by youth.
- Learn how nicotine and other substance misuse by youth disrupt normal brain development resulting in greater risk of dependence and addiction.
- Discuss family, school and community strategies to address this issue and prevent another generation from lifelong dependency on nicotine and other drugs.
