A Most Beautiful Thing
Annual Fundraising Virtual Event Presented by Canal Dock Boathouse
Thursday, October 22, 2020

Five young men from Chicago’s West Side were facing a future of gangs and gunshots.  Then someone offered them an oar and a seat in a rowing shell.  And thus began the journey of a lifetime.

A Most Beautiful Thing tells the story of America’s first all-Black high school rowing team.  The well-received book by Arshay Cooper, who captained that team, has now been made into a documentary narrated by rapper Common with  NBA greats Grant Hill and Dwyane Wade.  The story demonstrates the healing power of sport and teamwork and how both can help people bridge racial and social divides.

Canal Dock Boathouse is proud to be partnering with production company 50 Eggs, Inc. and author Arshay Cooper to bring A Most Beautiful Thing* to the New Haven community through a virtual gathering scheduled to take place on October 22.

We are looking for select individuals and companies to sponsor this special event to build support for Canal Dock.  This is an opportunity to be associated with this online event that will feature a screening of the documentary and a live presentation by the author, Arshay Cooper.

It is also a chance for you to demonstrate your support for Canal Dock, a fledgling non-profit agency that seeks to deliver opportunities for New Haven’s youth to experience the joys of boating, learn the value of teamwork and appreciate the beauty and potential of New Haven Harbor. Canal Dock partners with area schools, providing marine education, fitness and paddling programs using dragon boats, kayaks and rowing shells.

As Cooper reflects in his book, “When we were on the water, we were in a place where we could not hear the sound of sirens or bullets and that allowed us to shape a different vision for ourselves, of who and what we could become. And that was a beautiful thing.”

Please sign on as a supporter of Canal Dock so we can offer “a beautiful thing” to the young people of New Haven.
