The association will fund a higher education scholarship program to honor the Honor Guard core value of Perfection and to further the personal development and enrichment of dependents through the pursuit ofhigher-education. Association Scholarship Grants are established to financially assist dependent sons/daughters of members in good standing or who were members in good standing of the Association at the time of their death. The assistance shall be a monetary grant for an accredited institution of higher learning. The Association will begin with one education oriented scholarship/grant in the amount of $1,000.00 annual. This opportunity is not restricted - the Association will consider all applicants equally.
Dependents of any member in good standing with the Association will be eligible. The dependent must be enrolled full-time in a regionally accredited higher-education institution, pursuing an Associates or Bachelor level degree. Students must maintain a “C” or above to maintain eligibility. Once selected, the scholarship would pay $1,000.00 per academic year until the degree is conferred. The association will seek to increase the scholarship monetary amount, or increase the number of scholarships granted per year upon maturity of the program. An applicant must meet the following eligibility requirements:
(a) Be the dependent son/daughter of a member in good standing of the USCGCHGA or who was a member in good standing at the time of their death. Applicants are not required to be dependents of Association members to be considered.
(b) Be a senior in high school with an average of "C" or better during the most recent two semesters or be currently enrolled in a regionally accredited institution of higher learning with an average of "C" or better for the year immediately prior to application.
(c) Be enrolled in afull time course of instruction.
(d) The financial status of the applicant’s parents shall not be a factor in determining the applicants to be awarded grants.
(e) The receipt of a grant does not exclude an applicant from receiving additional grants in subsequent years.
(f) Character: Applicant upholds principles of morality and ethics; shows courtesy, concern, and respect of others; exemplifies desirable qualities of personality (cheerfulness, friendliness, poise); willing to cooperate with classmates and adults; wants to do the right thing in most situations.
(g) Service: Applicant participates in outside activities; is available on their own time and is sacrificing; willingness to render service to the school; readiness to show courtesy by assisting visitors, teachers, and students.
Applicants will follow the below procedures to make application for an education scholarship:
(a) Applications shall be submitted to the Association office, postmarked not later than a date promulgated by the Committee each year.
(b) Applicants shall provide documentation that they are dependents of a member of the USCGCHGA in good standing or who were members in good standing of the Association at the time of their death.
(c) Applicants shall submit with their application their reason(s) for attending or desiring to attend an accredited institution of higherlearningabove high school. Submissions shall be limited to two hand-written pages or one typed page and must specifically include immediate and long-range goals.
(d) Applicants who have not completed one or more years at an institution of higher learning shall furnish a certified copy of his/her scholastic record beginning with the tenth grade. Applicants who have completed one or more years at an institution of higher learning shall furnish a certified copy of his/her scholastic record while attending institutions of higher learning.
(e) Applicants shall furnish a copy of a letter indicating college, university, vocational school, etc., acceptance.
(f) Applicants are invited and encouraged to submit documentation in support of any personal accomplishments, extracurricular activities, or community service performed during the past two years.
(g) Applicants are invited and encouraged to submit a head and shoulder photograph to be published in the association newsletter if a scholarship grant should be awarded. The photograph will not be used by the Scholarship committee in consideration of awarding grants.
Administration of Scholarships
Grantees must show proof of full-time enrollment in order to continue to receive subsequent payments during their second, third and fourth years at the end of each academic year. Grantees will also be required to furnish a copy of their grade report following each academic year proving the student maintained a grade of “C” or better for the year. Grantees that do not meet the above criteria will have their scholarship/grant revoked for subsequent years.
