August 12, 2017 started as a normal day in our house. My husband, Virginia State Police Trooper-Pilot Berke Bates was getting ready to head to Charlottesville, Va to monitor the Unite the Right Rally. As I helped him carry out the 4 dozen cookies I made as an early Birthday treat (it was the next day) we said our good-byes; it was the last “normal” day in our house. Berke died when the helicopter he and Lt. Jay Cullen were in crashed in Albemarle County Virginia. I am supporting LEU for many reasons, the two most important being our almost 14 year old twins. He missed their Birthday every year to escort the riders on this 250 mile ride in honor of his fallen brothers and sisters in blue. LEU supports organizations like C.O.P.S. (Concerns of Police Survivors), to which I owe my very existence today. They brought smiles back to our children’s faces, gave me a network that understood what it means to have that last “normal” day and for that I will forever be grateful.
