Click next and follow the rest of the instructions!!**Attention 5th and 6th Grade FamiliesBeginning Friday, December 7th all 5th and 6th graders will be taking part in lessons on Human Growth and Development. The lessons will be taught in gender-separate groups by grade level teachers and specialists. The content is divided into 5 lessons and will be taught over 5 days. Any parent wishing to opt their child out of any or all of the lessons need to complete an opt-out form and return it to your child’s teacher. A parent preview meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 27 from 6:00-7:00 pm in the Mantua Library for parents to preview the materials and talk with school staff about the program.

In early November we were joined for the day by Hugh Whitehead of Fairfax County’s Urban Tree Management Division. Hugh brought 10 tall trees (each about 10 to 12 feet tall), generously provided by the county’s Tree Conservation Fund, for us to plant around the playground. Mantua Elementary is fortunate to be the recipient of this many large trees. The species planted are:
American beech (Fagus grandifloia)
American elm (Ulmus Americana)
Black gum (aka sour gum or tupelo) (Nyssa sylvatica)
River birch (Betula nigra)
White Oak (Quercus alba)

Thank you to the many students who planted the trees as well as the students who help water them during the recess “bucket brigade!” Hugh Whitehead of the Urban Forest team will continue to work with us and our trees, on lessons that involve learning from trees: data collection to track growth, photographic records, the impact of trees, and expressing information about trees through visual and language arts. As Hugh noted, “There are so many ways the trees could be a continuing contributor to the students’ education.”Woodson Parent's Night Out:

Do you need a night off to go shopping for the holidays, have a date night or just put your feet up? Then Woodson Parent’s Night Out is for you! Simply drop your elementary school child off at Woodson High School on December 7th at 6pm. Your child will enjoy a fun-filled evening that will include arts and crafts, games, a pizza party dinner and a movie. Pick up is at 9:30pm. Space is limited so register early to reserve your spot! All profits will go to support Woodson Math Center, a program that provides free peer math tutoring. Cost: $35 per child. Early Bird Discount (by November 16th) $30 per child. Family discount: $35 for the first child, $30 for each additional child. In order to register, please mail back a completed registration form (2 pages) for each child along with a check made out to W.T. Woodson HS to Woodson High School c/o Valerie Silver. Reminder About Early Dismissals
As shared in the first day folders, children will not be called out of class for early dismissal after 3:40pm and cannot be released to anyone other than a parent unless that person is on the emergency care card. The exception to the emergency care card requirement would be a release authorized by the parent through an email to mantuaesattendance@fcps.edu received prior to 1pm that day.
For “play dates” notes from parents of both the visitor and the host will be required for students planning to go home with a friend or neighbor after school. Students without corresponding notes will follow their typical dismissal plan.
