March Writing Tips from Mr. PerkinsSpring is right around the corner, and there are many joys of spring to smile about! Some of them are St. Patrick's Day, MLB baseball, and . . . state testing time. Although the same level of enjoyment might not be found by your student during the state's CAASP exams, I ask, "Why not?" If we really want to help our students, I believe one of the best ways is to share with them that these exams are their "opportunity to shine." Teachers and students have been practicing their skills throughout the year, and the state testing time lets the students say to themselves very proudly, "I can do this!" Here are a few ways to help your student be successful: Practice the "language needed" for each type of tested writing - There are 4 different genres of writing that students will be asked to be able to produce on the exam. They might not have to write in each area, but they need to know them. • Narrative - Writing that asks them to writer about an experience they have had. The language that MUST be in their essays includes the following: I, me, my, myself and we. These essays work best when the student uses several transitions to help the reader - first, then, next, after, and finally. • Opinion - Writing that asks students to take a side and convince the audience. I usually share that this a good place to think of the vocabulary of a courtroom or a lawyer. The language that MUST be in these essays includes the following: in my opinion, I believe, I think, it is clear, you should, for these many reasons. • Informative - Writing that asks the student to explain, inform, and teach about events. I share with the students that this type of writing is "just the facts, no opinion." These essays also benefit from using several transition vocabulary words to describe events that occurred in a certain sequence - First, then, next, after, and finally. One of the difficult most tasks for students is how to report the information if a reading has an opinion. Example: Martin Luther King, Jr. changed the world and made it a better place. When writing informatively, the student needs to refer to and quote the text, Example: The author stated that Martin Luther King, Jr. "changed the world" and that was when Dr. King . . . • Compare/Contrast - These are essays that ask students to tell how two subjects are the same and different. These essays can be particularly difficult for very young writers because the structure of the essay can be confusing. Here is a quick tip: remind your young writer to write a SEPARATE paragraph about how they are the same and a SEPARATE paragraph about how they are different. In this way, they won't mix same and different in one paragraph. The language that they MUST use includes the following: same, similar, alike, different, on the other hand, unlike. Good luck to all our sharp students preparing for the exam. I know you will do your best!
