In loving Memory of Marilyn Steichen
It is with much sadness that Marilyn Steichen, a longtime member of Fore Women Golf Association (FWGA), passed away unexpectedly on April 15, 2022. Marilyn is survived by her husband, Dean and their two adult children Adrianne (San Francisco) and Geof (Nevada). She and Dean are longtime residents of Danville. Marilyn started her teaching career in South Dakota and then taught in Seattle for three years before completing her 40-year career teaching home economics and chemistry at Monte Vista High School. Marilyn retired in 2002 and began her 'second career' joining FWGA (playing in both the 9-hole and 18-hole groups) and several other organizations. She and Dean were avid bridge players belonging to several groups as well as other golf groups, too. They traveled extensively with Sons in Retirement (SIR) including golf and bridge trips as well as cruises and land excursions. She was an active member of the BLUE STAR MOMS and volunteered at the V.A. (regularly making homemade quilts for auctions).
Marilyn was a regular greeter and registrar at the FWGA events for many years and made everyone feel welcome. She was always eager to participate in the FWGA annual fundraiser events and the costume and cart decorating contests, often competing for prizes with her group. There is a picture of Marilyn along with friends, Margaret Batesole and Jayne Kroner, on the FWGA Website-Social-Member Photo Gallery taken at the FWGA General Meeting (March 5, 2022 at Las Positas Golf Course).
Marilyn was one who was stoic about life and had a quiet and calm spirit. When she talked, people listened; for most of us are very verbal in women's groups. Marilyn was respected and appreciated by all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and remembered as a dignified and caring lady by our Fore Women Golf Association.
Celebration of Life will be on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at 2:00 to 4:00 PM
at the Danville Veterans Memorial Building – 400 Hartz Avenue, Danville.

Summer's here and there are lots of courses available in our area. Remember when you host - you choose COURSE and TIME. Please look at the Calendar and host for our group. All play dates are in need of hosting. We need YOU!!! As you know when we all take turns it doesn't fall on just a few. Set up a few tee times and let the coordinator know. They will post. They will also help you with questions. Thank you and see you on the course!!!! Sharon

Casual play is moving along smoothly. Thank you to everyone who has stepped up to hostess. There are still openings throughout the year for some more chances to do our share of hosting. Remember when you host you get to choose time and place. Any questions? Just ask. See you on the course.

This month's lesson on the Rules of Golf
YELLOW Staked Penalty Areas
I know that some players get confused about the relief rules regarding the White, Yellow or Red penalty areas.
The Yellow Stakes and Yellow lines represent a water hazard penalty area that divides the hole's general playing area into two parts. The tee box side and the green side. You must hit over this penalty area to reach the green.
There are TWO options for relief if you hit into this penalty area and decide not to play out of it. You are allowed to go into the penalty area and hit out of it if you so choose for no penalty.
Each option has a ONE stroke penalty.
Option 1: "Stroke and Distance" . You must hit your second ball from where you hit the original ball.
Option 2: To the best of your recollection, find the spot where your ball crossed into the Yellow Penalty Area. Now look at the green side and find the flag and imagine a straight line connecting the two points. Walk backwards as far as you like along that imaginary line. Drop your ball in the best place within one club length of that line.
I use Option 2 most of the time. But it is your choice.
So again, TWO relief options for hitting into Yellow Staked penalty areas.

We ended up with three shots of day.
We had Therese Johnson with a shot of day on hole #7. She was in a fairway bunker and hit her ball where it then proceeded to hit the side of the bunker and flew backward over her head and out of the bunker. Amazing job!
In addition, Terri Malatesta had a Sandy Par on hole #13. We love those sandy pars.
And finally, we had Susan Chen on hole #18 with an amazing sand shot which landed super close to the hole. Great job!
There seemed to be a trend on shots of the day. They all involved sand bunkers.
Overall, we had a great day just the thirteen of us. We ended up with a five-some going out last. They managed to keep up and not have to separate. It was a two-person best ball tournament. And because we had thirteen, Jen Shaull had a blind draw for her final score and won! It was a breezy day, but not too cold and no rain.
Thank you to everyone who participated. Also, a big thank you to Hali and Jayne for helping me at the end with getting the scores to Therese. And of course, a huge thank you to Therese for setting it up and putting the scores into Golf Genius.
