Message from the President

Welcome to the inaugural edition of the South Orange County Delta Gamma Alumnae (SOC DG) Anchorline online newsletter! We are so excited to launch this and look forward to bringing you news, ideas and insight on a quarterly basis. I want to thank our Vice President of Communications, Sandra Thompson, for her tireless work in bringing this endeavor to fruition. Without her efforts this wouldn’t have happened.

Goodness! 2018…How are those New Year’s resolutions coming along? I’m about 50/50 on mine. Yes, I really will make myself go to bed earlier – tomorrow night. The plus and the minus of having kids grown and also no longer working for an outside company is that the time I rise in the morning is for me to decide. Makes it harder though to end the day when there are always interesting things beckoning. Hmm, tomorrow night!

Several years ago, one of my on-going resolutions had been to join this DG alumnae group. Somehow, I was always too busy. Plus, let’s face it – it is hard, at least for many of us, to walk into a room full of people and not know anyone. Finally, I did it and attended a meeting. I am so glad I did! One of the things I enjoy about this group of DG alums is our diversity of age and life experience. I can tell you from my own experience, this a very welcoming group. We are not cliquish, we range from newly graduated to…not so newly graduated, singles and married women. Not everyone attends every meeting. We come from many different colleges throughout the country where although our DG experience varied, we all share the commonality of DG sisterhood and values.

I ask you to make one of your resolutions to check out our calendar of upcoming events. We have some fun and varied activities planned for spring. Our February Murder Mystery event is back by popular demand and is always a hoot. Plus let’s face it, how many opportunities do we have nowadays to play dress up?! March brings our Farkle card game evening and spoiler alert, the last place finishers from the last two years have a special award planned! Founders Day is also in March and a lovely way to remain connected with Delta Gamma, and a reminder of all that we share. In April, we are very fortunate to be able to host a Braille Challenge brought to us by Blind Children’s Learning Center in Santa Ana. As a hands-on experience, family members 12 and up are included and a number of our UCI collegians will be attending as well. Also, last but certainly not least, don’t forget every month we host a happy hour at varying locations around south county. Watch for those Evites and we hope to see you soon!

As we move into 2018 one resolution I’m sure we all agree on gets back to our Delta Gamma roots, to “Do Good” in our home and community. Here’s to 2018!

Foundation Update

South Orange County Delta Gamma Alumnae Chapter takes pride in the fact that we give back extensively to the community. We are a sponsor of the “Vision Beyond Sight” dinner for the Blind Children’s Learning Center (BCLC) that will take place February 22. This event is an immersive dining-in-the-dark experience, and it will feature blind motivational speaker and author Jake Olson. We will be joined by the two other DG alumnae groups in Orange County, as a sponsor of the BCLC fundraising walk in May. The Blind Children’s Learning Center’s mission is to prepare children with visual impairments for a life of independence through early intervention, education, and family support.

In addition to supporting the Blind Children’s Learning Center, we have donated $1,000 toward a merit-based Delta Gamma Foundation scholarship for a deserving Delta Gamma student at University of California, Irvine. Delta Gamma is a leader of academic assistance in the Greek community. This scholarship is given to those with strong academic performance; involvement in Delta Gamma, their campus, and community; professionalism; and writing. This wonderful scholarship helps make a difference in the recipient’s life, and we relish being a part of this. I am so proud of this amazing group for continuing to “do good!”

Collumnae Update

This year we have been focused on building a stronger bridge from our alumnae group to the collegians at the Delta Phi Chapter of Delta Gamma at UCI.  At our September meeting, several alums volunteered to be mentors.  THANK YOU!   We sent the chapter President, Luanna Buchanan, the mentor list with emails addresses and phone numbers.   It has been given out to the whole chapter – so don’t be surprised if a Delta Phi contacts you for advice. If you are interested in being added to the mentor list, please send me an email with your phone number, email address and your area of expertise/professional experience.

We delivered pizzas to the Delta Phi DG House for their dinner one night during their big annual Recruitment in September.   We also took them Krispy Kreme donuts during finals week in December in order to give them a sweet study break.  Word got out and they went quickly!  We will be doing that again at the end of this quarter.

The Delta Phi’s recently elected a new Director of Alumnae and her name is Taylor Young.  This will really help with communication between us since we now have a single focal point.  I met with Taylor and started planning out our next steps for this quarter together.   Taylor is starting to contact our mentor list to speak during their Monday, Chapter meetings.     I will be speaking at the February 12th Chapter meeting to talk about working in the male dominated world of hi tech and providing them some survival tools.  You may be next!

On Sunday, February 25th at 2 pm, the Delta Phi’s are opening their DG house to us for a tour.  If you are interested in attending, please RSVP by sending me an email.     Parking at the UCI DG house is impossible – so we will be working on a parking strategy.  I will send an email with directions to everyone who wants to attend once we have the total of attendees.

We are beginning to work with Alisa Rausch, Collumnae Chair at the Newport SOC DG Alumni group, to share the cost of gifts for the graduating seniors.   There are 35 seniors this year.  If anyone has a great idea for a gift for them, please let me know.   We will also begin to discuss the annual Bridging Ceremony between seniors and alums.  The purpose of the ceremony is to welcome the seniors into our alumnae world and present them with the gifts.  I will keep you updated on the date for this event so that you may attend if you are interested.

The Delta Phi’s will be holding a fund raising event this quarter and we will be invited to participate.  Stay tuned for more information on this from Taylor as they finalize their event plans.

Alumnae Roundup

If you haven't paid your per capita dues or South Orange County Alumnae dues, you can pay them here.  Our South Orange County Alumnae dues support our alumnae group and our local activities - both foundation activities and social activities.

Are you thinking about getting more involved with South Orange County Delta Gamma Alumnae? We would love to talk to you about positions that are coming open for the 2018-2019 year. Please contact our president, Wendy Blades.

We are collecting General Mills Box Tops for Education. Each box top is worth 10 cents when they school redeems them from General Mills. One of the schools that participates in the program is the Blind Children's Center in Los Angeles. Please mail box tops to the address at the bottom of the newsletter. You may also contact Wendy Blades or Dr. Margaret Moodian, if you have questions.

On March 20, Los Angeles will welcome its inaugural Tables That Bloom event—a signature fundraiser being championed by Delta Gamma alumnae chapters across the country. Inspired by our Spring into Design theme, the event will feature custom designed tablescapes, which will be auctioned off to support LA’s Blind Children’s Center and the Delta Gamma Foundation. They anticipate 200 attendees at the luncheon event, which will be held downtown at the prestigious California Club, and includes a champagne reception, auction and keynote address by entrepreneur designer and UCLA Delta Gamma alumna, ErinCondren.com.
