Welcome to the Briarcrest PTA Newsletter!

We have had a great start to the school year!  It has been so nice to see all the students and parents at pick up and drop off and get back into a regular routine. Our PTA team has been working hard this year to help families be more connected to Briarcrest and the community.

Included in this newsletter are several ways you can be involved including Reflections art info, Class Directory, joining the PTA, donating to the Little Free Pantry, and Volunteering.  We will also be including a DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) Book recommendation each month.

Join the PTA

We are asking each of you to join the PTA.  When you join PTA, you are supporting local, state, and national efforts to improve the lives of students and their families. Joining online is easy or you can fill out our paper form in English or Spanish and return it to the school. Click here find out more about the value of the PTA!. Here you can find discounts available to PTA members state- and nationwide.

Join your Class Directory

Join your BC class and grade directory to connect with other families and get the inside scoop on school, PTA, and social opportunities for your child! Sign up here in less than one minute! You can also express interest in being a classroom representative, a person who connects parents and guardians to this information—it’s a small time commitment that can make a big difference for our school community! We still need reps for LeBlanc, Holguin, Schmidt, Rose, Dimas/Goree 4th, Dimas/Goree 5th, and Grimm.

Art Docent Program Volunteers - Virtual

Our Art Docent Program is looking for more volunteers to lead virtual art projects. As they say, many hands make light work. The Art Docents usually lead four projects a year. We need volunteers who can demonstrate and record art projects to be shared online for the 2021-2022 school year. The art project video demo can include a combination of a slideshow presentation or live action that leads the students through a step-by-step process. Projects can be themed by season, technique, or artist. If you are interested in becoming an Art Docent and have additional questions, please email Jacky at BriarcrestArt@gmail.com - thank you. :)

Eat Yummy Food and Support Briarcrest PTA

The Briarcrest PTA is excited to offer several different fundraising opportunities for families to participate in throughout the year.  One of the yummiest and easiest ways to help support your school will be monthly dine out fundraisers at different local eating establishments.

Our October Dine Out fundraiser will be at MOD Pizza in Lake Forest Park on Wednesday, October 20th, from 10:30 am to close. You can order at MOD or online, but you must first commit to order (or order online) through a special link: https://www.groupraise.com/events/203462.

Watch for reminders throughout October for this fun day of eating out at MOD Pizza to support Briarcrest PTA!  Be sure to tell family and friends, and pass the link on!

Up next for November's PTA Dine Out fundraiser..... Chipotle!

Support Families in our Community

Little Free Pantry
Briarcrest will be sponsoring a Little Free Pantry again this year! Our Little Free Pantry is located at the corner of 145th Street and 25th Avenue in the parking lot of the Shoreline United Methodist Church.

Please donate non-perishable items as able or take items when needed. Popular items include canned vegetables and proteins, nut butters, hygiene items, and kid snacks. Thank you for considering donations to help our community!

The Works Coat Drive

Briarcrest will continue to host collection drives to support The Works, an organization that provides childrens and teen clothing and hygiene products for Shoreline School District families. BC PTA will host a coat drive in October - December and will collect new coats sizes 4T - adult 3XL, preferably hooded. More info will be sent in October!

WSPTA Legislative Assembly

Briarcrest is allowed to send 4 voting delegates to the WSPTA Legislative Assembly to be helf virtually on October 23rd and 24th. The purpose of the legislative assembly is to determine the priorities of the WSPTA, to educate and mobilize advocates, and to advance WSPTA's legislative program.

Any PTA member is welcome to attend the WSPTA Legislative Assembly. Your registration includes access to all classes, educational opportunities, caucusing, and materials. For an attendee to also have the privilege of participating in the debate and vote during general season, they must be designated as an authorized voting delegate of their PTA by October 9. Email bcpresident@briarcrestpta.org if you would like to attend and/or be a delegate at the WSPTA Legislative Assembly.

Book Recommendation

Great Books to Talk About Race and Equity With Kids
Children’s Book Spotlight: The Day You Begin/El día en que descubres quien eres, by Jacqueline Woodson

This year, the Briarcrest PTA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee will feature a children’s book in each newsletter that we think can be a powerful jumping off point for meaningful conversations with our kids. Over the course of the year, we hope to spotlight books that cover issues such as race and racism, immigration and multilingualism, gender and sexuality, disability, and more. We also will feature books that appeal to different age/grade levels. We are also open for suggestions of topics and books you’d like to see covered!

For our first book, we’re choosing The Day You Begin/El día en que descubres quien eres, by Jacqueline Woodson. This beautifully illustrated book, available in both English and Spanish, talks directly to children about how it feels when suddenly you are looked at as an outsider because of your skin, hair, home language, or the “different” food you bring for lunch. We chose this book for our first spotlight because it speaks so directly to feelings of not belonging (so relevant at the beginning of a new school year!), and features diverse characters who realize that they can connect across, and because of, the identities and experiences that make them unique. It also is a wonderful introduction to author Jacqueline Woodson, whose work spans children’s and young adult fiction and tackles a range of challenging issues with depth and brilliance.
