Committee Chairs Needed for PTA 2014-15
Thank you to the many amazing people who acted as committee chairs this year. We have a lot of chair positions already filled, by new and returning people. We still need to fill the following positions: Carnival, Auction, Kids Care Club, Community Building Network, Academic Competitions, FLEX, Box Tops, MentorWorks Liaison, Drama Club Liaison, and Chess Club Liaison. If you are interested in getting more information about any of these jobs, or would like to take one, please contact Teresa LeMair at teresalemair@aol.com.

PTA Executive Board 2014-15
At Thursday's PTA Meeting, the PTA membership voted in the following Executive Board for 2014-15:
President - Julie Middleton
VP 1 Programs and Outreach - Lisa Libby and Ellen Lemieux
VP2 Fundraising and Membership - Meri Farling
Treasurer - Nicole Willis
Secretary - Teresa LeMair
Thank you all so much for stepping up to serve on next year's board! And, a huge thank you to Carolyn Stephan, who served two years as PTA Treasurer, and Jennifer Epley, who was this year’s President! The Mantua PTA would not be as wonderful as it is without your dedication!

Input from Parents in Regards to 2014-15 Class Placements
This summer will be a very busy one for the administration as they finalize staff and prepare for the new school year. If you have specific information that you feel they would not already be aware of that would make a difference in placing your child, please send a succinct email to JanMarie.Fernandez@fcps.edu.
Just a reminder, it is not helpful to state the desire for a specific teacher. Ironically, over the years, they have noted that parents do not always pick the best match for their children. They do not have the benefit of knowing the different teacher’s personalities and teaching styles, as the administrators do. The administrators work many days to thoughtfully complete class placements. Parent requests for specific teachers can often throw off the dynamics of this process and cause a classroom to be filled with too many students with similar needs.
Please do not feel that it is critical to send an email. Every classroom teacher fills out cards on each student at the end of the school year. However, if you do feel the need to send information about your child for placement purposes, please send it electronically by Monday, June 30th.

Lego League Interest
Were you unable to attend the Lego League Interest Meeting, but want to learn more? A handout distributed at the meeting is now available at www.mantuapta.org. The special guest, Jill Hamilton, who gave the presentation and has been running her own Lego League team for the past 5 years, is available for questions.  Her email address is jhamilton@sesi-online.com
If you are interested in serving as Mantua’s Lego League Coordinator, please contact Teresa LeMair at teresalemair@aol.com

Thank you to Field Day Volunteers
Thank you so much to the many parents who volunteered during this past week's Field Day! Over the three days, about 160 parents help walk children from station to station, keep score, encourage teams, etc. The students had a great time! Thank you also to the wonderful PE teachers and Specialists for putting everything together so seamlessly again this year!

BIG Thanks for the Donations!
Thank you for the wonderful and generous 6th grade party donations from the following families and businesses:
Daniel P. Lash at VLP Financial Advisors: Drawstring bags for all 6th graders
Adam Cetron, EYA/Mosaic District: 175 Water Bottles
Debra Hunter: Party drinks
Jim and Suzanne Wayman: Ice Cream
6th grade teachers: Popcorn machine

For Mantua 6th Grade Parents and Students
Would you like to be a part of a very rewarding program at Frost Middle School? Become a Buddy Family and sponsor a new student! What does it mean to be a Buddy Family?

We match your current student with a new student who has not been part of the Fairfax County School system prior to 7th or 8th grade. This match-up would occur during the summer. Rising 7th grade students who attended FCPS elementary schools are needed to help the new 7th graders arriving from outside of the FCPS system.  So even though you might be new to Frost, you still know the system and can be a buddy to a new student.

Your family would contact the new student and his or her family and answer any questions they might have. You might want to meet up for an ice cream or a swim in the pool together. Having a buddy before school starts makes an easier transition into school for both the new student and his/her family.

The Buddy Family Program is a relatively new program that promises to ease the transition into school for all newcomers and provide a positive experience for everyone involved. It is a great way to make a friend and introduce a new student to the friendly, enthusiastic community which makes our school so special. Make a difference and sign up! Please contact Janet Mays at 703-323-1573 or home@maysfamily.us to sign up or for further information.

Translators comprise another vital part of our outreach efforts. We want every Mantua ES family to feel included and connected—should families need to have a document translated into their native language, our volunteers are here to help!
