Mantua Homes Tour: Volunteers Needed!
Volunteers are urgently needed for the Mantua Homes Tour on June 8th from 12:00-5:00 p.m.! Each slot only requires one hour of your time and will be easy and enjoyable! We need help with tickets sales on several days and need home representatives the day of the tour. Home reps will only need to check for wristbands and make sure attendees stay to the designated parts of the home. Go to sign-up genius to volunteer: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050944A8A92A1-mantua

The 1st Annual Mantua Homes Tour THIS Sunday
The Mantua Homes Tour is almost here! It is THIS Sunday, June 8th, 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. Tickets are $20 each, and will give you access to over 10 homes full of wonderful renovations and decorating ideas.

There are several ways to purchase tickets. You can email mantuahomes@verizon.net for a registration form, and mail it in with a check made out to Mantua PTA or return it to the school office. Tickets will be sold at the school on Thursday, June 5th and Friday, June 6th from 8:30 to 9:00 a.m. Or, you can purchase them at the Mantua Picnic on June 7th. Wristbands can be picked up at Mantua Elementary on the day of the tour, June 8th, starting at 11:30 a.m. Everyone entering homes on the tour MUST have a wristband. Enjoy!

Field Day: Volunteers Needed!
Field Days will be held the second week of June! We will need lots of volunteers to help. Field Days are:
Kindergarten-2nd Grades:  Tuesday, June 10th
3rd-4th Grades:  Wednesday, June 11th
5th-6th Grades:  Thursday, June 12th
The morning volunteer shift is 9:15 a.m.-12:00 noon and the afternoon volunteer shift is 12:45-3:15 p.m. Volunteers will sign in at the front office, and then report to the gym, where the PE teachers will give instructions for the day. Students will come to the gym and get their instructions and the fun of Field Day will begin! Volunteers escort students from station to station, keep teams together, make sure students understand the station, and keep score.
You can sign up to volunteer for Field Day 2014 at www.SignUpGenius.com/go/5080E45AEA82F4-mantua. Please consider helping! If you have questions, please contact Teresa at teresalemair@aol.com or 703-862-8702.

Important Field Day Information for Students:
  • Students should bring a towel to keep in the classroom.
  • Water will be provided, but we suggest students bring their own water bottles.
  • Students must wear sneakers - not flip flops or Crocs.
  • Use sunscreen; most activities are outdoors.
  • We suggest students bring a bag lunch on their field day to help alleviate the number of students buying lunch at the same time.

Input from Parents in Regards to 2014-15 Class Placements
This summer will be a very busy one for the administration as they finalize staff and prepare for the new school year. If you have specific information that you feel they would not already be aware of that would make a difference in placing your child, please send a succinct email to JanMarie.Fernandez@fcps.edu.
Just a reminder, it is not helpful to state the desire for a specific teacher. Ironically, over the years, they have noted that parents do not always pick the best match for their children. They do not have the benefit of knowing the different teacher’s personalities and teaching styles, as the administrators do. The administrators work many days to thoughtfully complete class placements. Parent requests for specific teachers can often throw off the dynamics of this process and cause a classroom to be filled with too many students with similar needs.
Please do not feel that it is critical to send an email. Every classroom teacher fills out cards on each student at the end of the school year. However, if you do feel the need to send information about your child for placement purposes, please send it electronically by Monday, June 30th.

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program Celebration
You are cordially invited to join us in celebrating 40 wonderful years of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing program at Mantua Elementary. In the fall, the Deaf Program will be moving to a new location, but before they go we want to take the opportunity to celebrate the history, memories, and families that have made this program so special.
Please join us on Saturday, June 14th, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Mantua Elementary School. A light lunch will be provided as well as fun and games for the children. You won’t want to miss the opportunity to hear from Mrs. Fernandez, the Principal, as she shares her memories of the last 19 years. RSVP to Tina Tingler, Assistant Principal, at tjtingler@fcps.edu

Please note: We are in need of desserts for our party! If you can help by sending something brownies, cupcakes, cookies, etc in, please deliver it to Lorri Fowlkes in the front office on Friday June 13th or bring to the party. Thanks in advance for your contribution!

SOL Testing Schedule
The remaining SOL schedule is as follows:
June 3 – 3rd grade Science
June 4 – 4th grade Virginia History
June 5 – 5th grade Math
June 6 – 6th grade U.S. History
June 10 – 3rd grade Math

Important Note from School Regarding Activate
All parents should immediately stop their students from using Activate at home. The school has begun a testing phase that should only be done at school. It will cause serious problems for the developer if students use the program at home while the testing phase is done. Thank you.

Notes from the Library
Please note that all library books are due on Wednesday, June 11th. Also, parents should check their children’s Tuesday folders on June 17th for information about Mantua’s summer reading program called Read Around the World.

PTA Executive Board Elections Held at June PTA Meeting
The slate of PTA Board Officers for the next school year is

Vice President 2 (Fundraising and Membership): Meri Farling
Treasurer: Nicole Willis
Secretary: Teresa Willebeek-LeMair
Only dues-paying PTA members are eligible to vote. Please join us on Thursday, June 12th at 7:00 p.m. during our regularly scheduled General PTA meeting.

Interest in Lego League?
Interested in learning more about Lego League? Come to an interest meeting on Wednesday, June 11th at 7:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. This meeting is open to all students and their parents who want to learn more about this program. The Lego League has its competition in November so waiting until the next school year to get started is too late. A special guest who has been coaching a Lego League team for a few years will be here to guide students and parents on what is involved in this particular competition. Please contact Lesley Kowalski at kowalskifamily4@verizon.net if you have any questions.

Attention 6th Grade Parents
The Sixth Grade Awards Ceremony and End of the Year Party are fast approaching! This year, the awards ceremony will be held on Friday, June 20th in the morning. After the ceremony, the celebration will commence!
The students will return to their classrooms, change into casual party attire, and enjoy pizza and drinks with their friends. At approximately 12:30 p.m., the kids will head outside with their teachers for a soccer tournament. Our DJ will officially kick off the party at 1:30 p.m. in the gym. The kids will enjoy fun music, hula lessons, a hula hoop contest, limbo, a photo booth, volleyball, aloha basketball, coconut bowling, a class photos montage, an ice cream cart, class cake and snacks, candy leis and great crafts, and other fun surprises and treats! To make all this happen we need several volunteers for the big day! If you are able to help out on June 20th, please go to the following link
: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090E4DADA7229-aloha.
