Input from Parents in Regards to 2014-15 Class Placements
This summer will be a very busy one for the administration as they finalize staff and prepare for the new school year. If you have specific information that you feel they would not already be aware of that would make a difference in placing your child, please send a succinct email to JanMarie.Fernandez@fcps.edu.

Just a reminder, it is not helpful to state the desire for a specific teacher. Ironically, over the years, they have noted that parents do not always pick the best match for their children. They do not have the benefit of knowing the different teacher’s personalities and teaching styles, as the administrators do. The administrators work many days to thoughtfully complete class placements. Parent requests for specific teachers can often throw off the dynamics of this process and cause a classroom to be filled with too many students with similar needs.

Please do not feel that it is critical to send an email. Every classroom teacher fills out cards on each student at the end of the school year. However, if you do feel the need to send information about your child for placement purposes, please send it electronically by Monday, June 30th.

Field Day at Mantua
Field Day is coming up! This is such a fun day for Mantua students. The schedule is as follows:

Tuesday, June 10th: K-2nd Grade
Wednesday, June 11th:  3rd-4th Grade
Thursday, June 12th: 5th-6th Grade

Important information:

  • There are two sessions for each field day (9:30-11:00 a.m.) and (1:00-3:00 p.m.)
  • Students should bring a towel to keep in the classroom.
  • Water will be provided, but we suggest students bring their own water bottles.
  • Students must wear sneakers - not flip flops or Crocs.
  • Use sunscreen; most activities are outdoors.
  • We suggest students bring a bag lunch on their field day to help alleviate the number of students buying lunch at the same time.

Flyers will be going home in Tuesday folders. Please check for details.

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program Celebration
You are cordially invited to join us in celebrating 40 wonderful years of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing program at Mantua Elementary. Please join us on Saturday, June 14th, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Mantua Elementary School. A light lunch will be provided as well as fun and games for the children. Attention Sixth Grade Parents!
The Sixth Grade Awards Ceremony and End of the Year Party are fast approaching! This year, the awards ceremony will be held on Friday, June 20th in the morning (more details from teachers and school administrators to follow.) After the ceremony, the celebration will commence!

The students will return to their classrooms, change into casual party attire, and enjoy pizza and drinks with their friends. At approximately 12:30 p.m., the kids will head outside with their teachers for a soccer tournament. Our DJ will officially kick off the party at 1:30 p.m. in the gym. The kids will enjoy fun music, hula lessons, a hula hoop contest, limbo, a photo booth, volleyball, aloha basketball, coconut bowling, a class photos montage, an ice cream cart, class cake and snacks, candy leis and great crafts, and other fun surprises and treats! To make all this happen we need several volunteers for the big day! If you are able to help out on June 20th, please go to the following link

Good Morning Mantua Crew for Next SchoolYear
The Good Morning Mantua (GMM) News Show is looking for applicants for crew positions for the 2014-15 year. To apply for a position as an anchor or technician, students must complete an application and have it turned in to Ms. Dunfee as soon as possible. They must obtain a recommendation from two teachers/specialists and a parent or guardian. Students applying to be anchors are asked to write a paragraph on two or three different themes they would use as content while anchoring. Only 6th graders can apply for anchor positions, but both 5th and 6th graders can apply to be technicians.

  • Arrive at the Distance Learning Center (room 246) at 8:45 a.m. each day of the week you are assigned
  • Develop the script for each day during lunch time of the week you are assigned (anchors only)

Jewelry Plus Sale for Next Year
Thank you to everyone who has donated to the Jewelry Plus sales in the past. The sales were always very successful due to your generosity! Though the PTA was unable to hold the sale this year, there will be one again next school year. The theme for next year’s sale is Jewelry Plus Arts, Crafts, and Hobbies. If you have beads left over from making jewelry, extra yarn, or a kit for making a model boat that never got made, please set aside a bag or box now to collect your donations for next year. We will start taking donations in January.

We are seeking an additional volunteer to help with the sale next year. If you are someone who enjoys sorting and has room right now for a number of items already collected, please contact Karen Gaughan at allgone@cox.net.
