PTA Meeting THIS Friday
Please join us this week for the monthly PTA meeting on Friday, May 2nd at 9:30 a.m. in the school cafeteria. There is no better place to learn about upcoming PTA events and hear from our principal Ms. Fernandez about hot school topics. Please see minutes from the April PTA Meeting – and previous meetings – here on our website:  http://www.mantuapta.org/pta/meetings.html. (Please note that the April minutes are considered “draft minutes” until reviewed and approved at this month’s meeting.)

Teacher Appreciation: May 5-9!
Teacher Appreciation Week is May 5th-May 9th! It is the perfect opportunity to show our teachers just how much we appreciate all of their hard work and dedication to the class. Over the years, it has become a tradition at Mantua to do a “little something” each day for our teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week (SHHH, it's a surprise.) Each thing is totally voluntary; you can do none, some, or all!

Also, don’t forget our wonderful specialists – PE, Art, Italian, IA’s, Reading Teachers, etc. We have so many wonderful staff members at Mantua that are deserving of some recognition.

Bring in ONE flower (not one bouquet, one flower.) You can buy this flower, but you can also send in something from your garden.
Tuesday – Bring in a card (handmade or bought) or picture or crafty handmade item.
Wednesday – Bring in one sweet treat:  one Hershey’s Kiss, one homemade cookie, etc.
Thursday – Bring in one school supply: Post it notes, a Sharpie, disinfecting wipes, stickers, etc.
Friday - Bring in one piece of fruit.

Some room parents may be sending out additional information for your classroom. If you have questions, please contact Teresa at teresalemair@aol.com.

NEW INFORMATION: Teacher Appreciation Luncheon Goes "South of the Border!"
Our Cinco de Mayo Teacher Appreciation Luncheon: Monday, May 5th,  1:30-3:00 p.m.
To honor our wonderful educators, the Mantua PTA (that’s us parents) will host the annual Teacher Appreciation Luncheon in the library.  This year we are going South of the Border and treating our teachers to the tastes of Mexico! Teachers will enjoy delicious food courtesy of the grateful Mantua parents.

To do this we will need LOTS OF HELP! Please consider providing the food items assigned to your child's grade or family as follows (note the changes from last week's email):

Family 1: Desserts! Cookies, brownies, cakes and pies - you bake it, we'll take it!
Family 2: Sour cream, salsa, and guacamole
Family 3: Bags of tortilla chips
3rd Grade: Cut fresh fruit and berries
4th Grade: Salad dressings
5th Grade: Cut fresh vegetables
6th Grade: Bags of salad

Food dishes and items not requiring refrigeration should be brought to the library starting at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 5th or sent to school with your child. We'll have baker's racks set up to receive your items at the school entrance. Items that require refrigeration should be brought directly to the library before 12:30 p.m. or contact one of us and we'll make arrangements.

If possible, use disposable containers and utensils. If you need your container returned, please label it with your full name. Dishes will be held in the office for you to pick up.

Volunteers are also needed to help with set up, clean up, and to provide a helping hand during the luncheon. If you have any questions, ideas, or would like to be a volunteer, please contact the PTA Hospitality co-chairs, Meri Farling at 703-354-5750 or merifarling@hotmail.com or Deanna Firth-Freemyer at firthfreemyer@yahoo.com.

Yearbooks Still Available to Order
There are only 200 copies of this year’s Mantua Yearbook available for purchase! If your student is one of the over 600 students who has not yet pre-ordered, than you have to hurry and place you order. Once all the yearbooks are sold, no more will be printed.

Compared to previous years, the 2014 Mantua Yearbook has a laminated cover and is larger in size. It has three times more pictures on every class page and is just FULL OF MEMORIES! If you would like your child to have a yearbook on the last day of school, please hurry! You can order your $30 yearbook online at www.Jostens.com.

The Yearbook Committee appreciates all who have contributed pictures for this year. Since the final copy is set for printing, they cannot accept any more photos. Thank you!

6th Grade Party – Aloha, Mantua!
Committees are formed and plans are underway for this year's Sixth Grade Party, "Aloha, Mantua!" The party is scheduled for Friday, June 20th, following the Sixth Grade Awards Ceremony (more details to follow in upcoming Alert News editions.) We've received some generous donations from our wonderful sixth grade parents, and others have asked about donating or sponsoring party items. If you're interested in donating a party item or contributing in some additional way to the cost of the party, please contact Lesley Kowalski or Margaret Scheele. Looking forward to a great event!
