Also, please note: for that make up day, we will follow a Wednesday Week 2 schedule. Students who have band or strings on that scheduled day should bring their instruments.

Mantua Spring Fling is Coming!
The Mantua Spring Fling will be held on Saturday, March 29th from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Grab the whole family and come to the school for more fun than you can imagine! There will be gigantic inflatable amusements, carnival activities, games and prizes for everyone as well as local food vendors, a marketplace, and a silent auction featuring prizes from all your favorite teachers and Mantua staff! Don't miss this fun-filled afternoon and a great way to support your school. You can find all the information you need about the Spring Fling right HERE!

Spring Fling Volunteers Needed! Can You Help?
As with any of our PTA events, we cannot have a successful Spring Fling without the help of volunteers. Can you volunteer to help for one hour on Saturday, March 29th? Please visit our VOLUNTEER SITE to see how you can help. Contact Meri Farling at merifarling@hotmail.com with any questions.

Important Immunization Requirement
Do you have a child entering 6th grade next year? If yes, he or she may need a booster dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis.) Sixth grade students cannot begin school in September without documentation of having had the Tdap booster. Parents or guardians of current 5th graders should check their child’s immunization records.

  • If your child is 11 years old, he or she should get the Tdap immunization, and documentation should be provided to the school.
  • If your child is 10 years old, he or she may receive the Tdap vaccine, Boostrix, which is approved for 10-year-olds, or he or she may wait until the 11th birthday to receive the vaccine approved for 11-year-olds.
  • However, if your child’s 11th birthday is after September 2, 2014, and he or she is entering the 6th grade, your child must have a medical exemption from the doctor stating when he or she will receive the Tdap in order to attend school.

Documentation, such as a signed and dated immunization record from the physician, stating that your child has received this immunization must be provided to the school registrar as soon as possible. You may start sending in your documentation now to your school’s registrar while your child is still in the 5th grade to ensure that he or she meets this requirement before the first day of school in the fall. Fairfax County Public Schools tracks compliance with this state requirement and students who do not meet the requirement before September 2 will not be able to start school.

Students can receive immunizations required for school at any Fairfax County Health Department immunization clinic. Information about health department clinic locations and hours can be found at http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/hd/hdclinicsite.htm.
More information about immunization requirements and exemptions can be found in the current version of FCPS Regulation 2101 and on the FCPS website.

Support for Parents in Special Education (SPISE)
The next meeting will be held on Monday, March 24th at 8:00 p.m. at Lisa Libby's home. This is a group started by parents, for parents. Do you have a child with special needs and are overwhelmed by the day-to-day demands of being a parent? Do you want support and information from parents that have been through the special education screening and IEP process? Do you constantly research better diagnoses, therapies, and learning programs for your child?

Do you want to be able to vent your frustrations and share your victories with people who understand and share your struggles? If any of these are true, this is definitely the group for you. If you would like to join us, please contact Mantua ES parent Lisa Libby at Lisa.A.Libby@gmail.com.

Costa Rica Trip
Do you want to be a part of an amazing experience this summer? Do you want to explore what makes our earth so special? If so, come join Ms. Warner on a Costa Rican adventure!

This summer, I will be leader of the fabulous Costa Rica Trip sponsored by Earth Explore, and I’m inviting all rising 5th, 6th, and 7th graders to join me! Earth Explore is a national program designed to offer 5th-8th grade students the opportunity to explore their world through travel and hands-on discovery. This amazing trip is currently priced at $2,395 – which includes all meals, all lodging, all ground transportation, and all educational lessons/activities/guides (airfare cost TBD.)

Our trip will be from July 26th-August 2nd. Throughout the trip, students will have the opportunity to see rich landscape and wildlife of this country. We will explore Tortuguero National Park, raft the Rio Pejivalle River, watch a sea turtle lay eggs, visit a local school, go down a zip line in the jungle, hike in the Monteverde Cloud Forest, go on a horseback ride, and climb to a forest Sky Walk in the Santa Elena Cloud Forest. During many of these activities, we will view various wildlife species such as sloths, toucans, ocelot, and iguanas.

I am not doing this as a 4th grade teacher from Mantua, but as someone who loves learning, enjoys being outdoors, and wants to have an adventure. This event is not sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools or Mantua Elementary School. This is solely Taylor Warner working with Earth Explore to offer an incredible opportunity to students.

Please take some time to read the information from Earth Explore, visit www.earthexplore.com, and consider this fantastic opportunity. If you are interested in hearing more, please email Ms. Warner at costaricajune2014@gmail.com!
