Sixth Grade Graduation Party
Our 6th graders will end this year with the Sixth Grade Award Ceremony followed by a fantastic party! A team of parents transforms the gym into a themed party room. The kids will eat (pizza, cake, etc.) enjoy games and music, and more! This takes lots of planning, so... Volunteer information meetings will be held on Tuesday, March 11th at 9:15 a.m. in the cafeteria and Tuesday, March 18th at 7:30 p.m. in the library (pick one!) to discuss party details and to sign up to help. For more information and to help out, please contact Lesley Kowalski at kowalskifamily4@verizon.net or Margaret Scheele at Margaret_Scheele@yahoo.com.

To cover the cost of the party and a 2014 graduate T-shirt, we are collecting $20 from each student. Students wear their T-shirts on their field trip to Gettysburg and for other end of year celebrations. Please send your order form and payment of $20 in cash or a check payable to Mantua PTA to your child's teacher by Friday, March 7th. You can find the order form in this week’s Tuesday folder or at http://mantuapta.org/documents/6gtshirtorderform.pdf.

Raccoon Runners Program
The Mantua Raccoon Runners is a positive youth development program for girls in 3rd-6th grades. This program, sponsored by the Mantua PTA, will empower young girls to be true to themselves through lessons in positive body image, health and nutrition and social awareness. This will all be done while we strengthen ourselves through various fitness activities as we train for a 5k run. Any girl in grades 3-6 is eligible to participate.

The Raccoon Runners is a six-week program that will meet before school Monday and Wednesday mornings from 8:00- 9:00 a.m. in the gym starting on Monday, March 10th. We will start our mornings with some sort of physical activity. Exercise will consist of a variety of activities from yoga to strength training and flexibility to 5k conditioning. After our workout and stretch, the girls will have a healthy snack while we cover our lesson for the day. There will be a new lesson each time we meet. Lessons will cover a variety of subjects including health and nutrition, safety, hygiene, emotions, team building, self-esteem, gratitude, social issues for girls and many others.

At the end of the program, the Raccoon Runners will participate in the Raccoon Run 5k on Saturday, May 10th. The permission slip can be found on the PTA website at http://mantuapta.org/documents/rrpermission.pdf.

If you have any questions, please contact Meri Farling at merifarling@hotmail.com.

Costa Rica Trip: Interest Meeting is TONIGHT!
Do you want to be a part of an amazing experience this summer? Do you want to explore what makes our earth so special? If so, come join Ms. Warner on a Costa Rican adventure! There will be an interest meeting tonight,
Tuesday, February 25th at 7:00 p.m. in the school library.
This summer, Ms. Warner will be leader of the fabulous Costa Rica Trip sponsored by Earth Explore, and she’s inviting all rising 5th, 6th, and 7th graders to join her! Earth Explore is a national program designed to offer 5th - 8th grade students the opportunity to explore their world through travel and hands-on discovery. This amazing trip is currently priced at $2,395 – which includes all meals, all lodging, all ground transportation, and all educational lessons/activities/guides (airfare cost TBD).
The group will leave in late June for travel to Costa Rica. Throughout the trip, students will have the opportunity to see rich landscape and wildlife of this country. You will explore Tortuguero National Park, raft the Rio Pejivalle River, watch a sea turtle lay eggs, visit a local school, go down a zip line in the jungle, hike in the Monteverde Cloud Forest, go on a horseback ride, and climb to a forest Sky Walk in the Santa Elena Cloud Forest. During many of these activities, you will view various wildlife species such as sloths, toucans, ocelot, and iguanas.
Please note that Ms. Warner is not doing this as a 4th grade teacher from Mantua but as someone who loves learning, enjoys being outdoors, and wants to have an adventure. This event is not sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools or Mantua Elementary School. This is solely Ms. Warner working with Earth Explore to offer an incredible opportunity to students.
Please take some time to read the information from Earth Explore, visit their website (www.earthexplore.com), and consider this fantastic opportunity. If you want to hear more about the trip before (or after!) signing up, there will be an information session for anyone interested on Tuesday, February 25th at 7:00 p.m. in the school library. If possible, please contact Ms. Warner to let her know if you will attend! You can email Ms. Warner at costaricajune2014@gmail.com. She would appreciate hearing from all of you – interested, thinking, or not interested – so she can get an idea of numbers of students who may join her for this 7-day Costa Rican adventure!
