Reminder: Monday, November 11th (Veterans' Day) is a regular Monday school day.

Impact Aid Forms - Return ASAP
Any Student-Parent Survey forms that were not filled out at parent-teacher conferences will be going home in the Wednesday folder this week. It is VERY important that a form is completed, signed, and dated for every student in the school. FCPS receives money for each student whose parent works on federal property. Whether or not a parent in your family works on federal property, please complete the form, including your signature and date. Return the form to your student's teacher as soon as possible. Thank you!


Picture Make Up Day

Picture make up day will be Wednesday, November 6th. Students will be called up by grade or family. The retakes will be on the stage and will only last until 12:00 p.m. If you want your child’s picture taken again, please send them in with the old packet on picture day. If you did not order pictures on picture day, but would like to order them on retake day, please contact the front office for an order envelope.

Chat N Chew Books Delivered

Fall Box Tops Contest Winner!
The winner of the Fall 2013 Box Tops Contest is Ms. Hansen's class - congratulations! They have won a pizza party. Thanks to everyone at Mantua for submitting their box tops. Superintendent's Listening Tour
Superintendent Karen Garza invites parents, students, employees, and community members to share their thoughts about the school system during a listening tour that will begin this fall and continue in early 2014.
The Providence District tour is scheduled for Saturday, November 9th at 10:00 a.m. in Kilmer Middle School, 8100 Wolf Trap Road, Vienna, VA. Those planning to attend the fall listening tour are requested to register at Please indicate if an interpreter is needed.

Spirit Days
Thanks to all who participated in our Red Ribbon Spirit Week in an effort to reinforce “A Healthy Me is Drug Free!” Our next spirit day will be Monday, November 11th. Students are encouraged to support Veterans by wearing red, white, and blue or American themed clothing. Students may also wear camouflage or military apparel that follows Mantua’s dress codes (no pictures of weapons please.)

Military Child of the Year – Nomination Window Now Open!
Operation Homefront is pleased to present the Military Child of the Year Award to outstanding military children who demonstrate resiliency, leadership and achievement. Nominations will be accepted between October 3rd and December 14th. Students may be nominated by teachers, school counselors, tutors, and other community leaders. To nominate, please visit: Award Recipients representing each service branch will receive an award at the Gala, a laptop computer, and $5,000 cash.

Support for Parents In Special Education - SPISE Meeting 11/14
This is a group started by parents, for parents. Do you have a child with special needs and are overwhelmed by the day-to-day demands of being a parent? Do you want support and information from parents that have been through the special education screening and IEP process? Do you constantly research better diagnoses, therapies, and learning programs for your child? Do you want to be able to vent your frustrations and share your victories with people who understand and share your struggles? If any of these are true, this is definitely the group for you.

AAP Information Meeting at Mantua

An Advanced Academics Parent Information Meeting will be held at Mantua Elementary School on Wednesday, November 13th from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in room 257. The Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, Eva Bousbouras, will provide information about levels of service at Mantua, as well as explain and answer questions about the screening processes for Level IV services. The meeting is open to all 2nd-6th grade base school parents.

INTO THE WOODS at Woodson High School
Come see former Mantua students perform in this terrific musical! There are two special children focused performances. The Children’s Matinee features Act I only and will be performed on Saturdays, November 9th and 16th at 2:00 p.m. There will be a meet and greet the cast after the shows. All tickets are $5.
The full show (not recommended for young children, approximately 10 and under) will be performed on November 10th at 2:00 p.m., November 9th, 15th* and 16th at 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices: Seniors 65+: $5, Adults/Children: $10.

Woodson High School Craft Fair

W.T. Woodson High School in Fairfax will host the 21st Annual Holiday Happenings Craft Show on Saturday, November 9th from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. This exceptional show features juried handmade arts and crafts. We'll offer a diverse selection that includes: fine arts, jewelry, fiber arts, wood, photography, pottery, giftware, pet accessories, stress relief items & hundreds of holiday collectibles/decorations. There will be approximately 100 exhibitors, and admission is FREE for shoppers.

Translators comprise another vital part of our outreach efforts. We want every Mantua ES family to feel included and connected—should families need to have a document translated into their native language, our volunteers are here to help!
