The Bicycle Trails Council of the East Bay (http://www.btceb.org) invites you to our monthly Ride Like a Girl group ride at Crockett Hills Regional Park in Crockett.

Crockett Hills has a lot of climbing. The trails are not very technical (i.e. no roots or rocks or gap jumps) but there is enough climbing that this ride is best for those who have ridden mountain bikes before and who are aerobically fit.

BTCEB hosts a women-only mountain bike ride on the first weekend of the month. The intent of the ride is to have fun! and to meet other women who love to mountain bike.

We offer ride groups for ALL SKILL LEVELS, from novice to intermediate to advanced. All rides are ‘no-drop’ rides (we won’t leave you behind or let you get lost) and are fully supported. A novice rider should be able to ride 8-10 miles on hilly fire roads for 2.5 hrs.

Meet in the parking lot at the Crockett Hills trail head.

Meet time: 9:15 am. This will give you time to sign in, unload your bike, etc.
Roll time: 9:30 am.

For more details RSVP on Meetup.  See you there!

Crockett Hills Update
by Scott Bartlebaugh

The trails are generally in good shape at Crockett Hills due to the dry weather and a little winter trail maintenance.   We're looking forward to the Saturday February 29th trail day and getting a few larger items reworked.

The vegetation is on the rapid rise, the cattle have returned (they ran out of water in the adjacent pasture), and the ticks are ramping up.   That combination will tend to create a decline in overall conditions but the tread should remain in good shape.   Don't forget to check yourself for ticks for the next several months and use repellant if you like.

Park staff have a new flail mower which should make it easier for them to mow.   They plan to make several passes on Sugar City, Two Peaks, and Soaring Eagle but mowing dates haven't been set yet.

Here's a link to a US Forest Service trail maintenance video for those looking for an overview of practices.   While it's a little dated - check out the brick phone - most of the information still applies.

BTCEB Membership Drive
by Mike Udkow

While membership on our Meetup site continues to grow to over 3,900 followers, membership in the BTCEB, your mountain biking organization, has been lagging.

To grow, to survive, and to represent the mountain biking community, we need your support. Your membership dues support our Gala rides and our RLaG program, pays for our insurance, helps to support NorCal High School MTBing and supports trail work at China Camp, Rockville, Fernandez and Crockett. We are hard at work developing the JMP Pump Track.  Our Board of Directors meets bi-monthly to discuss all topics relevant to local mountain biking.

Membership levels start at $30, with a $15 student/hardship level. Lifetime membership is $500.

Aside from the dues, we truly need and value your membership.

And speaking of membership.  As a BTCEB member Columbia Sportswear invites you to the Columbia Sportswear Employee Store.

A few times a year BTCEB members will receive an email with an invitation to shop at the Columbia store in Richmond to take advantage of discounts on clothing, shoes, and merchandise.

The current store opening for BTCEB members ends March 1, 2020 so don't delay!

Bring a photo ID and your BTCEB membership card as well as the invitation to shop at the store.

Please join or renew today at www.btceb.org

See you on the trails!

Keeping Trails Open
By John Roberts

This February with its dry weather has mostly been offering great riding conditions.  An exception was the windstorm at the beginning of the month. This resulted in some trees falling and blocking some trails.

In the picture you can see the author’s young son riding under a large fallen tree, a task that was not so easy for adults.  Senior citizens on a hike were also challenged with the obstruction.

On February 20, BTCEB Trail Coordinator Henry Mitchell, Oakland Trails Executive Director Stan Dodson, and the author, cleared the Bayview Trail at Joaquin Miller Park of this large deadfall.

Being a member of BTCEB or OaklandTrails.org helps fund the trail equipment, facilitates trailwork opportunities, and provides for trail advocacy. If you are a member of one or both of these organizations, thank you.

FOCC Seeks Park Manager
by Joyce Abrams

We are looking for an FOCC full or part time Park Manager.

As volunteers at China Camp, you know there is plenty to do to keep the park open and thriving. We have staff and we have volunteers, but what we don’t have is an employed person to coordinate, oversee, set priorities, help orchestrate and be the point person for routine and ad hoc maintenance issues. This is a management position and requires someone with flexible hours (mostly set by themselves), good people skills and reasonably computer skills (email, form completion, scheduling, etc.). This person would help guide the park maintenance for the aides, the camp hosts, the volunteer maintenance host and, of course, the volunteers.

If you or someone you know might be interested please feel free to contact Joyce Abrams for more information.

Great Redwood Trail project opens in Ukiah
by Kevin Fixler, Press Democrat

UKIAH — An ambitious plan to build the nation’s longest trail on a former rail line took a leap forward in Mendocino County on Friday with the opening of a new mile of paved path in city limits. It was a small sign, heralded by a sizable crowd of cyclist and trail enthusiasts, of a route envisioned to one day stretch 320 miles from Humboldt Bay to San Francisco Bay.

“Today’s event represents the future for the North Coast. This officially represents the pivot point,” said state Sen. Mike McGuire, D-Healdsburg, who authored the 2018 bill to create the walking path. “This trail is just as much a recreational project as it is an economic development project. This is going to open up opportunity for their local economies in the years and decades to come.”

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by more than 100 supporters. It was meant to celebrate the first trail segments completed since state authorization two years ago of the Great Redwood Trail. Overall, about 30 miles of the trail are now in place from Marin to Humboldt counties.

The new segments, totaling about 1 mile, are on opposite ends of an existing 1-mile pathway that runs parallel to Mason Street along the abandoned rail line. The northern segment runs north of Clara Avenue, passing by a grand valley oak tree and over a bridge spanning Orr Creek. The southern stretch takes off at Gobbi Street and continues to Commerce Drive.

Together with the existing path, the whole project cost about $4.6 million, covered by state transportation and natural resource grants and other funds.

City officials said the trail would unify Ukiah’s downtown with nearby neighborhoods, providing residents the chance to get about and get to know each other in ways they couldn’t before.

“It really helps make connections in the community with relationship building,” said Ukiah Councilwoman Mo Mulheren, a candidate for county supervisor who helped spearhead the local project. “People from both sides of town can walk and meet each other. We really didn’t have that before.”

Trail advocates are already at work seeking funding for the area’s next segment, a 3-mile stretch south on county property.

To the north, beyond Willits, the trail is planned to run on dirt or shale path atop the abandoned rail line, which traverses the wild 50-mile Eel River Canyon. There, the railway has been buried by decades of landslides along its winding riverside path. The cost of restoring the line for freight traffic has previously been estimated at up to $1 billion.

That insurmountable hurdle in an age of diminished local freight hauling gave rise to the movement for a rail-to-trail project that would top all others in the country — offering the chance to one day hike or cycle from the far North Coast to the Bay Area.
