May 31, 2021

We can't believe this year is almost at the end.

We are so proud o
f all of our children for being able to persevere and thrive during this extraordinary 2020-2021 school year. We thank you parents for being involved in our school and your child's learning and activities to ensure their success.

We thank all of the teachers, staff and especially Mrs. Stutzel for being flexible with the ever changing needs and updates of the district school and students. We are grateful for the countless hours, dedication, and care you showed our school and our children this year.

Thank you to the many parents who volunteer their time to ensure our fun programs continued this year. Despite the changes, we have made many memories this past year. Some of our favorite memories include: field trips, AAYF, Arts Alive, Red Ribbon Week, Yellow Ribbon Week, Nights out, DEI happenings, teacher appreciation, PEF Main Event, Skechers Walk, Movie Night Out, Halloween Drive By, Pumpkin Carving Contest, Reflections, Sweetheart Dance, welcoming students back on campus and so much more.

We thank the 5th grade parents whose final year at Dapplegray is this year. We have appreciated your commitment to Dapplegray all of these years and have learned so much form you. You will all be missed!

We especially would like to thank our fearless leader, supporter, planner, organizer, and cheerleader extraordinaire, our PTA PRESIDENT, HOLLY WOESNER! Without your leadership and guidance, none of this would have happened. In this unprecedented year, Holly kept the PTA organized and focused, encouraged the entire executive board, committee chairs and volunteers to think differently and create programs that our entire school could enjoy. She is the primary liaison to the District, and Mrs. Stutzel, and probably interacted with every single committee chair and VP almost daily. She did all of this because she loves our Dapplegray family and it shows. We thank you for being so supportive of all of us this year and always putting the kids first! You helped to make this year a great year despite all the obstacles. We love you Holly and are excited that you will be leading the PTA again next year!

We reflect on this past year with a great sense of pride in all that we accomplished TOGETHER. We certainly proved that..
.

FROM MRS. STUTZEL
Thank you Dapplegray Parents for your commitment to making your child’s education a top priority during this very difficult year.  The sacrifices made by you and our Dapplegray staff made it possible to provide the best learning outcomes.

Thank you Dapplegray PTA and Booster Club for your tireless dedication.  You stepped in and created opportunities to enrich the lives of the students at Dapplegray.  It did not matter if our students were in our Hybrid, DLA or Independent Study programs, you stayed connected!  We celebrate the ingenuity and fortitude in all that you provided during this year!

I wish you a wonderful summer break and look forward to seeing you in the start of the new school year!

Warmly,
Mrs. Gina Stutzel
Proud Principal of Dapplegray

DEI LEGACY PROJECT AND COMMITTEE UPDATES

The Dapplegray Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee believes that diverse life experiences and perspectives enrich our school and community. In this spirit, the Dapplegray DEI Legacy Project seeks to facilitate an understanding of these experiences and perspectives, while also encouraging community reflection on diversity and inclusion, and individual and community heritage, legacy, and inspiration.

Dapplegray families were asked to share who in their family’s history was an inspiration and describe their legacy.  On display in front of the school, we have the submissions of those who shared.  Please take the time to drive, walk or ride by our school to enjoy the pictures and stories of our Dapplegray submissions.

The responses are moving and inspiring. These stories reveal experiences of brave ancestors from various spots around the globe who paved the road for our students to be on our campus daily. The DEI committee hopes the series will encourage open dialogue, challenge preconceptions, and provide an experiential exploration of the culturally-varied population of our school. The aim is to ultimately help our community have a more meaningful understanding of each others’ backgrounds while also recognizing the common threads that knit us together.

We are Dapplegray. We represent stories of trial, hardship, strength, and success.

DAPPLEGRAY HONORARY SERVICE AWARDS
“Together or Apart, We are all Colts at Heart.”

Dapplegray’s PTA would like to recognize our HSA Honorees for the 2020-2021 school year.  We are fortunate to have so many amazing people to contribute to our great school! These select few are being recognized for going above and beyond and really making an impact at Dapplegray.  Here is a little something about each of these special people.

Charlotte Oduro – Rookie of the Year
Charlotte was the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion co-chair.  This was her first role on PTA and she took on this role with grace and hard work.  She was organized, came up with great ideas, and made sure the meetings were inclusive and welcoming.  Her work was recognized district wide as a model for other elementary school DEI committees.

Anna Littleford – Rookie of the Year
Anna served as the co-chair of the DEI committee this year.  She did a phenomenal job taking on this role creating a committee that was inclusive and welcoming and a safe space for all.  She worked to develop numerous thoughtful ideas to bring this transformative work to Dapplegray.  She is an imaginative leader helping to build relationships throughout the community and is a gem at Dapplegray!

Lesly Combs - Rookie of the Year
Lesly took over the 4th VP spot due to a vacancy.  She worked with elementary school red ribbon week chairs all over the district to coordinate that week so that it would be the same for DLA and hybrid students.  She also created the goodies bags for each Dapplegray child for the Halloween drive through during Red Ribbon week.  Lesly did the same for yellow ribbon week. She also has worked very hard to ensure that our disaster supply shed and backpacks are restocked and ready to go.

Denise Stone  - Rookie of the Year
Denise did an awesome job at 2nd VP this year.  She helped created monthly teacher appreciation events - new this year - to show our teachers our appreciation during the pandemic.  She also is doing a great job to plan Arts Alive. She is an asset to Dapplegray PTA and  PTA will benefit from her commitment and personality while her kids are at the school.

Anika Wijenayake - Rookie of the Year
Anika also did an awesome job at 2nd VP this year helping to plan monthly teacher appreciation events, the welcome back luncheon, the holiday luncheon, and the teacher appreciation week activities. This year she has gone above and beyond during the pandemic. She thinks outside the box and has come up with fantastic ideas. In addition she is involved in Multicultural day and was pivotal to planning Arts Alive this year, too. She is an asset to Dapplegray PTA.

Michelle Bressler  - Very Special Person Award
Michelle took the role of communications chair when it was left vacant.  She timely produced the newsletters each week helped to develop a social media policy.  She also created a very fun virtual sweetheart dance for the school and always does everything with grace and a smile.

Becky Cohu - Very Special Person Award
Becky did a phenomenal job as the room parent chair - a particularly tricky year due to the various programs offered - hybrid, DLA, and independent study.  She also serves as a room parent, helped plan the virtual sweetheart dance, helped plan the return to school decorations, and serves on the booster club.  She does all this while working full-time as a special ed teacher and raising her FOUR children.  Her energy and enthusiasm are never ending and we are so lucky to have her!

Holly Woesner - Very Special Person Award
Holly continues to go above and beyond for Dapplegray students, the school and our community. She is inclusive to all, supportive, loyal and honest person.  She is fully into supporting local sports in our community.  She always looks for new opportunities and create fun experiences to bring people together. Somehow she does all of this while juggling a full time job and raising three boys.

Yvette D'Elia - The Colt Award
Yvette did an amazing job as historian this year.  She captured the first day of school pics in a beautiful way and by visiting the homes of many PTA members to capture that special day.  She has created a beautiful art instillation that is currently displayed at the school showcasing our diversity.  She pulled off a very successful virtual reflections contest and presentation. She serves on the DEI committee.

The Colt Award – Heather Rohrer
Heather took on the role of 3rd VP this year without a co-chair.  She had to completely re-invent this position during the Covid-19 crisis.  She researched dozens of virtual field trip options, communicated and presented the options to the teachers, and organized them.  She even attended the 5th Grade Astro Camp for the entire three days to make sure it went smoothly and successfully despite that she was on vacation.  She is reliable, smart, confident, and worked so hard.

Julianne Lusain - The Colt Award
Julianne is an excellent recording secretary.  She's reliable and kind and always gets the minutes done quickly and accurately.  She also joined the DEI committee this year and has offered a great contribution and voice to that committee.

Natsu Haga - Honorary Service Award
Natsu is pivotal to PTA success.  She did an outstanding job as 1st VP this year and is a spreadsheet wizard.  She did a stellar job keeping our membership numbers up even during the pandemic and while other schools struggled with membership.  She organized the first ever virtual Multicultural Day.  And, AAYF only happened for the kids because she and Cathy worked so hard to organize the classes and the supplies.  We are so lucky to have her on DG PTA!

Marie Sophe Coster - The Caring Colt Award
Marie helped promote and foster mental wellness and mindfulness during the pandemic for our children and for our parents.  She created an 18 week program for parents each Wed morning at 7am to help us deal with our stress during the pandemic.  She offered her services free and at a very reduced rate for our students as well.  Special recognition for Marie for dedicating her knowledge and time!

Cathy Eades - Continuing Service Award
Cathy has continuously supported Dapplegray Elementary, the PTA and programs outside of the school.  She has worked on Art Alive working on the catering, has been the AAYF Chair and been a Room Mom on many occasions.  Cathy always volunteers herself for committees and supporting the school where she can.  As an individual she is loyal and transparent and makes it easy to work with her. Cathy has the ability to put anyone at ease. Dapplegray will miss the Eades family and how they have supported Dapplegray over the years.

Carrie Lambert - Continuing Service Awar
Carrie has served on the Dapplegray PTA for the last five years.  She is a reliable volunteer always serving and never asking for recognition.  She served as the PEF liaison this year and made sure the PEF information was always conveyed to our parents.  She helped train the 1st VPs this year and is always willing to lend a hand and lend a listening ear.

Amie Chessmore - Continuing Service Award
Amie is one of those who continuously supports Dapplegray school and the students.  Over the years Amie has been our Reflections Chair and volunteered her time as an Arts Alive presenter. She has been an Art At Your Fingertips docent and room parent over the years.  Amie has quietly supported so many of our events with her talents as an artist.  This includes Fun Run logos year after year and fundraiser logos to name a few.  Dapplegray will miss her talents as our resident artist and her continued help within the school.

Karen Clavadetscher - Outstanding Teacher Award
Ms. Clavadetscher continues to excel in teaching our students year after year. She is a leader in her grade level and designs curriculum with aplomb. She maintains professionalism in all situations, but she is able to ask the difficult questions that not all staff or teachers would ask. She is a DG treasure, has been here for 21 years (since the school opened!), and continues to provide superior education to every student she comes across. Recently the fourth grade has had several new teachers to the team, and it's Karen who does most of the work to get the newbie up to speed. She should be recognized (though she dislikes the attention) for her top notch teaching. We could go on and on... :)

Gina Stutzel - The Galloping Colt Award
Gina had a very difficult year like most principals across the nation in figuring out how to open schools safely.  She's worked tirelessly this year for the kids.  She also has been open to all of the virtual activity ideas that PTA has put forth this year.  She's been a supportive partner to PTA in a very challenging year.

Tarrah Vierra - Lambert - The Fred London Character Award
This is Tarrah's final year at Dapplegray and it won't be the same without her.  She has held many of the positions on the PTA board - usually on the financial team.  She has served on the Booster Club for all of the years as well, including being on the executive board and always on the parent event planning committee.  Tarrah has overcome personal strife in her years at Dapplegray, but she never lets that get in the way of her commitment to the kids and to the school.  She is honest and trustworthy and one of the best people we have ever met.  She is a role model and never met a stranger.  She would literally give the jacket off of her back to help another and truly deserves this award.

DAPPLEGRAY EVENTS THANK YOU
Dear Dapplegray Families,

We would like to take a moment to express our deep gratitude to each and every one of you.  This has been an unprecedented year, and we not only made it through as a community, but rallied around each other and lifted our school up.  We are finishing our school year with our doors open and our hopes high.  This could not have been achieved without your support.  Parent support is shown to enhance many aspects of a child's education.  It bridges the gap between home and school, increases academic achievement, higher critical thinking skills, retention rates, and socioemotional development.  You have knocked it out of the park over and over, even in a year of fear and uncertainty.

Thank you to everyone that donated to PTA, Teacher Appreciation Week and Arts Alive.  The teachers loved their succulent gifts, continental breakfast, luncheon, and dessert bar. Arts Alive was a huge success and the kids' delight warmed our hearts.  We could not put on wonderful events such as these without your help.  A special thank you to all of our parent artist presenters for sharing their talents with us! PTA thanks all of our Dapplegray families for your time, dedication, and membership.  Dapplegray community support is unrivaled, and we feel very lucky to be part of the Dapplegray Family.

Thank you for a year of great support.  It has been a pleasure serving such a wonderful community.

Denise Stone and Anika Wijenayake, 2nd VP PTA

PEF THANK YOU

Desaree and I would like to thank you all for your support during this year and the support you have given to PEF.   We are thankful for all you have done to support our events and fundraising throughout the year.

We also have a message from Christine Byrne, our Executive Director of the Peninsula Education Foundation.

Carrie and Desaree
PEF Representatives

Thank you to all who participated and supported Main Event Live and helped to make it a huge success! We are grateful for you along with our donors, corporate sponsors, business partners, volunteers and watch party hosts. We raised over $280,000 that will directly support the students in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District. Although we could not physically gather together for this year's Main Event, it is so inspiring to see our community come together for our children's education.

Sincerely,

BOOSTER UPDATE

Dapplegray Elementary School Booster Club End of Year Report

Hello to all of our Amazing, Perseverant, Dedicated, Encouraging, Forward & Outside the Box Thinking Dapplegray Families of the 2020-2021 school year.

One of the years in education that will go down in history as probably THE most challenging of any given school year since the creation of the public school system. The sudden transformative powers seen around the globe in parents at home suddenly forced into teacher roles to create home classrooms where distractions were minimized at all costs and kids became very creative with their screen savers and backgrounds during online school. All of our children separated in different quadrants of the house making sure internet signals were good, we had toilet paper in each bathroom and that maybe Mom or Dad could sneak in a possible trip to Starbucks for some Essential sanity I mean drink to quench that much needed thirst.

On behalf of our Dapplegray Booster Club we would like to THANK YOU and let all of our amazing families know that without YOU our Village would not be complete! Each of you play a vital role in culminating a culture of engaged learners and creative thinkers that will one day be global citizens who will impact this world positively. Part of this culmination comes from the extracurricular programs that the Booster Club was able to support this year that our kids were able to grow and benefit from.

We were so excited to be able to support additional field trips this year thanks to the efforts & research of Heather Rohrer on the PTA. The Movie Night planned by Gina Mirigliani and her team was flawless & a new fun adventure for our families to get to participate in. On a personal note, I would like to publicly thank Tarrah & Holly for especially showing up this year, staying the course & helping me push through when I needed.

The dedication & non-stop support that has poured into our school this year has been such a source of positive reflection in what a gift we have in Dapplegray! Our families never gave up, never stopped supporting our school and it is reassuring that we have such perseverance around us and people who can think outside the box to help give our kids the continued needed security that they need in order to foster continued positive growth.

We are so grateful for our families, our village, our 'Ohana! Thank you for supporting all that we do. It is our honor and privilege to lift our children up by supporting the many programs we do & it is because of YOU that we can do what we do so THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!
