Sometimes referred to as “tactical urbanism”, Better Block began in Oak Cliff, TX as an alternative to traditional urban planning. It uses quick, cheap and temporary solutions in underserved neighborhoods. Over an April 2010 weekend, hundreds of Dallas residents rejuvenated a block and changed the psychology of the street.
Patrick Blaydes, Senior Project Manager of Better Block” and urban planner by trade, explores this new way of building community and connection from the ground up and how this movement has grown across the country and became an international movement.
One tool that Better Block uses is WIKIBLOCK, an open-source toolkit of designs for benches, chairs, etc, designed and cut of a sheet of plywood and then be assembled without glue or nails, and used instantly!
