He is a regular speaker and writer on a broad range of topics, including business planning and succession, and the business aspects of the legal profession. He is a member of the American, Illinois and Chicago Bar Associations, The Economic Club of Chicago and the Chicago Chapter of the World Presidents' Organization.

David has been designated an Illinois Super Lawyer, an honor given to the top 5% of attorneys in the state. David has received a number of awards and accolades from the legal, business, and philanthropic communities.

David is an active board member of the Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago (JUF) and is immediate past chairman of its board of directors. David has also held multiple positions within JUF. David is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) and serves on its Executive Committee. David currently chairs the Global Operations: Israel and Overseas Council for JFNA where he works with and engages the Federation system on critical overseas issues, particularly in Israel. David is active in AIPAC and is a regular visitor to Israel.

David has run in the Chicago Marathon 11 times on behalf of the American Liver Foundation, the American Cancer Society and, most recently, the JUF.

Brother Brown is part of a great family of ZBTs. His father is Murray R. Brown, a 1954 Phi Epsilon Pi brother of the Psi Chapter at the University of Illinois. David Brown's late brother is Steven B. Brown, a Rho Chapter brother from the University of Illinois, graduating in 1977. David's sons are both ZBTs: Joshua C. Brown, a 2012 graduate of the Phi Alpha Alpha Chapter at The George Washington University, and Ryan Brown, a 2015 brother of the Rho Chapter. His nephew, Jordan S. Brown, is a current undergraduate in the Rho Chapter.
