This year the PTA will be sponsoring two programs in our community. (1) Adopt-a-Family and (2) Samuel's Trees. Please read below for further details on how you can help during this holiday season.

•  Adopt-A-Family 2018  •

Silver Spur is honored to be a part of the Adopt-A-Family program this holiday season through Harbor Interfaith Services (HIS). HIS is located in San Pedro and provides assistance and services such as housing and job searching to the homeless and working poor. The Adopt-A-Family program is a holiday giving program that pairs a family in need with a sponsor to fulfill their wish list and contribute to help relieve their burden. It is a wonderful way to share the holiday spirit with our neighbors in need.

We are lucky to have two families to sponsor this year!

The Huerta Family
Marisela is a single parent to two children- Manuel (17) and America (7). They’ve been receiving help with their basic needs such as food and shelter since Marisela was injured at work. As she recovers, she’s paying her rent but struggling to pay utility bills. Marisela is working to regain her health and confidence & appreciates our help providing her family with a memorable Christmas.

The Monaghan-Berthiaume Family
Melissa & James have a two year old son, Larick. They recently transitioned from shelter to permanent housing. Both parents work and attend school at LBCC to earn their AA degrees. They are so grateful to spend their first Christmas in their own home and appreciate our support to make this a special one for their son.

Thank you for making a difference and contributing to make this their best holiday yet!

How to participate
Please come by the office to look at their complete Wish Lists and to select an item to purchase for them. We will have 2 separate boxes for each family to collect the wrapped/labeled presents and gift cards- by FRIDAY, DEC. 14th.  We will present the gifts to them on behalf of Silver Spur on Saturday, Dec. 15th at the HIS Block Party.

Below are a few sample items:
Kids - Trolls, Arts & Crafts, Clothes, Socks & Shoes, Mega Blocks
Parents -  Clothes, Shoes, Pots & Pans, Robe & Slippers, Warm Scarf Set
Gift Cards - Ross, TJ MAXX, Target, Walmart, Food 4 Less, Gas Station

•  Samuel's Trees  •

Silver Spur is excited to partner with Samuel’s Trees, a non-profit organization who delivers Christmas Trees decorated with gift cards to families who have newborns struggling in the NICCU of CHLA. Founded by Dan and Kelly Parkins of Palos Verdes after the loss of their son in this unit in 2010, Samuel’s Trees has donated hundreds of trees each year to families in need.

Help a Children’s Hospital LA (CHLA) family in the Neonatal Intensive Critical Care Unit (NICCU) by donating any amount in the following types of gift cards to the school office by December 14th:

Major market retailer (Target/ Walmart)
Grocery
Fast food/coffee
gas

These gift cards will decorate Christmas trees that will be delivered to families who have a newborn struggling in the NICCU at CHLA. Please write the gift card amount on the outside of the gift card and Pin gift cards on the decorative tree located on the office desk by December 14th. Home-made cards/notes of encouragement are also appreciated.

•  Reflections - Awards of Excellence  •

Congratulations to all of you who entered!
Many Silver Spur students worked hard to create artistic masterpieces to enter in the art contest for Reflections.  We are so proud of everyone who entered.

All of the Silver Spur entries have been reviewed by our judges and we would like to share the names of those who have been awarded highest honors in their category at our school.  All of our winners will advance to the regional, then state and then national level for judging.  Many wonderful entries were submitted and the judges had a hard time selecting a winner from each category.  Entries were judged primarily on how well the student used his or her artistic vision to portray the theme, originality and creativity.

Listed below are the top entries as determined by judges…they are going on to the district level for another round of judging.
Congratulations to all below who will be advancing!
