| ONE WEEK UNTIL THE FUN RUN! See below for the latest information. Click here for our Soleado Fun Run webpage Principal's Message Are you teaching your child to make good choices?
Parents want children to make wise choices. When the time comes, you hope your child will say "no" to negative peer pressure and "yes" to positive things. Are you doing all you can now to teach your child to make these wise choices? Answer "yes" or "no" to the questions below to find out:
Do you give your child plenty of opportunities to make decisions—and expect her to live with the choices she makes? Do you discuss family decisions together? Do you brainstorm and come up with the decisions together? Do you sometimes think out loud and talk through how you are making a choice? Do you encourage your child to ask questions before she makes a choice? Do you teach your child that every decision has consequences? How well are you doing?
Each "yes" means you’re helping your child make better choices today and in the future. For "no" answers, try those ideas at home and watch your child shine in making good choices in the future.Mrs. Gina Stutzel Proud Principal of Soleado Elementary twitter@stutzelg http://soleado.pvpusd.net stutzelg@pvpusd.net

Book Fair News Soleado's Spring Book Fair. Wednesday, Feb. 28 from 7:30-3:30 pm. Please join us. Please click here for flyer. PTA News I am incredibly thankful to my executive board this year as we have successfully been able to shine with a number of vacancies. BUT imagine the possibilities IF we were able to fill all spots on the board! We have so many opportunities, including VP positions and chairs (smaller roles/time commitments). Please take a look at the VP positions HERE, and let us know what interests you! We would like to start with these important roles and then begin recruiting chairpersons for certain events. Please don't let the title "VP" scare you. You will have the support of our entire community, and we have broken down each task to ensure that no one person feels overwhelmed.
As a VP, we ask that you attend 2 meetings at school (which I promise will be short and to the point because I appreciate your time): YOU CAN EVEN SIGN UP FOR A VP POSITION WITH A FRIEND AS CO-VP'S AND ALTERNATE MEETING ATTENDANCE (district hosts meetings as well for each position, and you can alternate attendance).
1. Executive board meeting: Last Wednesday of every month right after drop off in the morning. Very intimate, one-on-one time with our principal to discuss school events and culture.
2. General meeting: Second Tuesday of every month. This is our time to collectively discuss current events and devise plans to improve our school.
Please contact me with questions or to discuss how you can help next year. No job is too small . . . We want to SHINE all year long!!

While the children/teens are in their support groups, we run a concurrent group for their parents/guardians. It is not mandatory but highly recommended as the adults in the group all have children/teens at home grieving the recent loss of a loved one. Our groups are facilitated by mental health professionals, MSW interns and/or trained volunteers.
If you have any students who have been affected by a recent death in their family and you think they would benefit from attending one of our bereavement support groups, please have the parents/guardians call us directly. Pre-registration is required.
Thank you for your continued support of our programs. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email or call.

Writing Tips for February from Mr. PerkinsWe are about three months away from the CAASP state exam, and I always share with the students what a great opportunity it is! What opportunity is that? A chance for the students to “check off” a few boxes and say, “I know how to do that!”
The students in grades 3-5 at the elementary school (and 6-12 at the MS and HS) will have assessments in reading, writing, and math skills. Students hopefully will understand to challenge themselves--this is the time to write your best essay!
CASSP-Language Arts/improvement strategies #1: How can I help my student to be on target when answering reading comprehension questions? The two-and-two strategies. On a short reading (i.e. an article or a chapter in a book), ask your student to write four questions. The first two questions will need to be about what they read, and they have to be able to answer the questions from the reading. Example: Where did Cinderella want to go? Why were her sisters jealous? The next two questions ask about information that the reader wants to know that’s not in the reading. Example: What period of time does the story taking place? Do you think a story like this could take place in today’s world? Why or why not? When students practice these skills, their comprehension and writing skills will gradually improve.
CASSP-Language Arts/improvement strategies #2: On the reading and writing sections, many standardized exams ask students to support their writing with details from the reading. Paraphrasing is a strategy that ensures that the writer will be on task. Example: The Great Barrier Reef is facing threats from pollution. The Australian government is fighting back with a long-term action plan.
Strategy: Pull some content words, and rewrite in your own words.
Content words: Great Barrier Reef, threats, pollution, Australian government, long-term action plan.
Sample sentence: Pollution is threatening the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. With a long-term action, the government of Australia is making a new plan.
Hopefully, some of these strategies will help your young writers feel confident with their writing and on the state exams.
I know they will all give their best effort!
