Principal's Message Welcome to the New Year Soleado Families!
One of my resolutions is to make sure that I share valuable, measurable, and beneficial information with my students and their families. I would like to start the year with a message that will make sense to all of us…attendance! One of the most vital parts of your child’s education is also one that’s easy to overlook. It’s attendance! Study after study shows that when kids regularly miss school, their learning, and especially their literacy skills, take a serious hit. Not only that, young students with poor attendance tend to turn into older students with poor attendance. Don’t let your child become one of them!
To keep your child on the road to school success consider these recommendations:
Take attendance seriously. As the parent, you set the tone. So be sure your child understands how much you value school and learning. If attendance is a priority for you, it will be a priority for them.
Prepare at night. In the evening, help your child set out everything they need to take to school the next day—their backpack, completed homework, proper shoes, signed papers, etc. They should also pick out their outfit and decide what they will have for breakfast. Respect the school calendar. When possible, avoid scheduling appointments or family vacations that conflict with school. It will remind your child that there’s nowhere more important for them to be during the week than in school!
Talk to your child’s teacher if you are experiencing problems that often result in school absences. Many families face challenges with health, child care, transportation and other issues. We are here to help any way we can to make attendance a priority for your child. Thank you for supporting your child and making them your number one priority. Your dedication and commitment to their education now, will result in a happy healthy adult!

From the desk of Kathy Barry, District Nurse: Flu season is upon us. Some of the symptoms of the flu are: fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue, sometimes diarrhea and vomiting.
Please keep your child home if they have flu symptoms. Students cannot return to school until they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications (for example, Tylenol).
The flu virus is spread mainly from person to person through droplets made when people with the flu cough, sneeze or talk. The flu virus also may spread when people touch something with the flu virus on it and then touch their mouth, eyes or nose. To help prevent the spread of the flu, stay away from others as much as possible to keep from infecting others. If you must leave home, wear a mask if you have one or cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or by sneezing into your elbow, not your hands. Wash your hands often to keep from spreading the flu to other.
Thank you.

Writing Tips for January
The calendar has turned and a new year is upon us. What a great opportunity to target improvement in writing! The more points of reference a student has, the more ideas that they can draw on when it's time to write. We all like to give and receive special presents during the holidays; why not share some new books that will get your student inspired to write? Start the new year with a new book.
Here are two ways I like to get even the most reluctant writer ready for the new year and all that is ahead of them:
1) Lists, lists, and more lists!- Students always see their families getting ready to go to the market. Whether your family is hi-tech (lists on their smart phone) or low tech (lists on paper) we all like the comfort of "mapping out" what we need to get. What most people don't realize is that "listing" for students is a way of getting organized. As a writing teacher, I personally encourage listing, as it offers students the opportunity to have a "pre-write" to begin their writing.
Some examples- Create a list of..... your favorite foods, 10 synonyms for wonderful, 10 qualities of a superhero....
All of these are jumping points that provide the initial vocabulary needed for a student preparing to write about a specific topic. In a writing notebook at home, have students write 3 lists a week. Once completed they will have several topics for writing, ready to go!
2- Sticker story
Stickers can be used to jump start a story. There are so many places to get stickers from and many times we are even sent some in the mail.
Here's the tip: Begin gathering a collection of interesting stickers- examples: flags, animals, holiday related-i.e. snowmen, fireworks, pumpkins, etc,
Attach the sticker to the top of the page and challenge your student with different types of writing-(with some possible examples)
1) Narrative- What happened to that flag? that elephant? (Remember to answer the 5w's)
2) Opinion- Why is Halloween the best holiday? Is it better to have a palm tree Christmas or a snowy Christmas?
3) Informative- When was the first Jack 'O Lantern made? What country are lions native to?
Many small ways to get the "writing ideas" flowing. Mr. Perkins Interested in AYSO Winter Soccer? Is your child interested in joining us for the exciting sport of soccer? Please click here for flyer.
