Hello Briarcrest Families!

I can’t believe it’s already November! The changing colors in the leaves and trees have been beautiful. We are lucky to live in this amazing place even if it is a little wet and windy sometimes. Hopefully you are able to enjoy this season of Thanksgiving with friends and family.  It’s one of my favorite times of the year.

Our PTA team continues to work hard and I’m grateful for everyone who adds a little bit (or a lot) to make our Briarcrest Community so great.  Things to check out in this month’s newsletter include ordering Spiritwear, turning in Reflections art, attending our Chipotle fundraiser, a Book Review, and an at home Art Docent Project. There are also a couple ways to say thank you to our teachers and staff at Briarcrest, info about the Coat Drive, and more.

Stay warm and safe!
Jenn Atherton

Book Recommendation

Great Books to Talk About Race and Equity With Kids
Children’s Book Spotlight: Dreamers/Soñadores, by Yuyi Morales

This year, the Briarcrest PTA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee will feature a children’s book in each newsletter that we hope can be a jumping off point for meaningful conversations with our kids. This month, we’re featuring Soñadores/Dreamers, a beautiful picture book that fosters conversation with children about the journeys and bravery of immigrant families, the magic of books, and the challenges and joys of learning a new language. In this award-winning autobiographical picture book, artist and author Yuyi Morales, brings to life her own journey to the United States with her infant son. Her vivid illustrations recall her feelings of being lost in a new land, struggling over language and unsure of the unspoken rules. This begins to change when she finds the public library. This place, at first suspicious, becomes a gateway to the impossible, unimaginable, wondrous dream of a new life and language. Throughout, Spanish and English mix together, just as the gifts that Yuyi has brought from Mexico accompany her and her son into the unfamiliar world of the San Francisco Bay Area. Soñadores/Dreamers is a powerful statement that immigrants don’t leave their languages and cultures behind while they explore new worlds.

Teacher and Staff Appreciation

Staff Lunch
Several times a year the PTA provides lunch for all teachers and staff.  The first lunch that we are providing will be during conference week. If you would like to make a donation to help cover the cost of this or upcoming lunches please donate here and write teacher lunch in the note section.

Extra Love for Nurse Susan!
Nurse Susan has been working extra hard this year during covid. She spends countless hours responding to emails and helping us all know when it is safe to send our kids to school and the proper steps to follow when they are sick. She also goes to kids in their classrooms, instead of kids coming to her when they need to be seen. She has been doing an amazing job of helping keep us all healthy and safe. We have set up a kudos board where you can leave a special note of thanks for Nurse Susan.  It is easy to add a quick message, picture, or even video to let her know how much we appreciate her. Kudosboard for Nurse Susan

Art Docent at Home - Pointillism

All these beautiful fall colors have us feeling inspired! Join us in making your own Pointillism Fall Tree

Pointillism (POINT - ILL - ISM) is a painting technique that uses small dots to make a picture. Pointillism was developed in 1886 by Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. You can see one of Georges Seurat’s famous pointillism paintings below. In traditional painting we mix the colors before we put them on our canvas but with Pointillism we use the science of optics to blend the colors of the individual dots on the canvas. This is just like our computer or television screen, the pixels in your screen are just like the dots in a painting. We could spend all day talking about the science of art so we’ll simplify it for you. There are 3 things that make pointillism to work: color of the dots, placement of the dots, and the value (light or dark) of the dots. Who knew that art used things like science and math to make the images we create? Typically Pointillism art is done using oil paint but today we’re going to get creative and use what we have in our homes. Follow our step by step directions here.
