2018 WHWC Conference: Revive

Friday Workshops

Preaching Panel Discussion
Come hear three persons preach and share their insights on the process.

Sticky Floors?  Stained-Glass Ceilings?
Presenter: Karen Longman (Free Methodist)
Karen Longman has significant expertise related to the barriers women face when pursuing leadership in higher education.  In this workshop, she will apply her expertise to the challenges women in ministry experience as they seek opportunities for higher levels of leadership within the church.  Longman is the Ph.D. Program Director and Professor of Doctoral Higher Education at Azusa Pacific University. She also serves as a Senior Fellow of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU), a Washington, DC-based association of 150 institutions, where she worked for 19 years as Vice President for Professional Development and Research.

Leading through Crisis
Presenter: Anita Eastlack, Executive Director of Church Multiplication and Discipleship for the Wesleyan Church

A crisis can hit at any time. A relational crisis, terminal illness, sudden death, terror attack, natural disaster.  Are we prepared? Together, we will explore how we can be prepared to lead through a variety of situations. We will come away equipped to practice on the smaller, daily challenges which can build our leadership muscles for the day when the “big one” hits.  We cannot prevent a crisis, but we can be prepared to loving lead through it.

Immigration
Presenter:  Jennifer Guerra Aldana (Nazarene)

People have always been on the move. This workshop will help name the multiple immigrant realities of Latino/as in the US including generational heritage and how Latino/as are changing the landscape of the US church. Second, you will be given different tools and strategies to navigate a new ecclesiology including bilingual ministries, evangelistic justice initiatives and hospitality practices to address the internal borders within the US church and continue the work of bridge building.

Soul Care
Presenter:  Rita Nussli, Associate Director with SoulFormation (Free Methodist)

We will explore together ways to care for our soul.  Practicing experientially spiritual disciplines that can aid our journey to deeper intimacy with the Triune God we love. We will listen together to God ... discerning The Trinity's invitation for us and those we serve to make the space and margins for God's grace to transform us.

Storytelling
Presenter:  Kimberly Majeski (Church of God)

In preaching as in life, we must find home, find our place, live into our voice. This is accomplished through knowing yourself and learning who you are as a communicator. In this workshop, we'll be trying on the "shoes" of storytelling as preaching craft. Women will be invited to find their place in the narratives of Scripture and to speak out of them as a participant rather than as an observer. This is an experiential conference and will engage a sense of connection with self and with the text. Preachers, teachers, bible study leaders and all communicators are welcome to this workshop.

Worship Toolbox
Presenter:  Soo Ji Alvarez (Free Methodist)

It's not easy planning and leading church worship services 52 Sundays a year. But whatever your passion, whether it be in music, visual art, drama, dance, writing or technical arts, you can not only survive but thrive with a well-packed Worship Toolbox. Join Rev. Soo Ji Alvarez for an interactive workshop for pastors and worship leaders of all ages and denominations. During the Worship Toolbox workshop, we will unpack some new tools and resources that you may or may not be familiar with.  These tools will help you tackle obstacles in your current area of ministry as well as learn how to cultivate a thriving Worship and Creative Arts Ministry that both touches the heart of God and develops and equips future generations of worship leaders to come.

 Advocacy
Presenters:  Jesse Middendorf (Nazarene) and Mari Gonlag (Wesleyan)
This workshop will explore how men can best advocate for women in ministry and how women in ministry can best advocate for one another.

Saturday Workshops

Church Planting Panel Discussion
Come hear a diverse group of church planters share their insights and experiences with church planting.

Imposter Syndrome & Shame
Presenter: Judi Schwantz (Nazarene)

Sexual Ethics
Presenter:  Mary Paul (Nazarene)

Peace, Love, & Jesus: Pursuing peace as a core value and an everyday, counter-cultural lifestyle
Presenter:  Perry Engle, Bishop in the Brethren in Christ Church

Radical. Provocative. Misunderstood. Jesus was given the title “Prince of Peace” hundreds of years before he was even born (Isaiah 9:6). This seminar will discuss ways followers of Jesus can embrace his revolutionary values of pursuing peace, respecting human life, and living as uncompromising agents of forgiveness and reconciliation in the world.

Mentoring
Presenters:  Shirley Goodmand (Nazarene), Joanna Dewolf (Free Methodist), Gloria Roorda (Free Methodist), and Julie Gray (Free Methodist)

Vicarious Trauma

Presenter:  Annie Wood-Bell, MSW, LSW (Church of God, Anderson)

Clergy and other helping professionals can feel traumatized through the process of hearing about trauma, and by being present with people who have experienced trauma.  As professionals, often we do not prioritize or engage in the important introspective work we must do with ourselves to be effective in our service to other people in our lives.  Through this workshop you will learn about trauma and stress and its impact both directly and vicariously.  We will explore ways to become more resilient in our lives, and integrate our wide range of experiences in order to more effectively work, lead, love and engage with our families and communities.
