What is Fastelavn?
Roughly described as a danish version of the pre-Lenten Carnival tradition associated with Roman-Catholic countries, in which children wear costumes and go out asking for candy.

What is Fastelavnboller (buns)?

Fastelavnsboller (buns) are these days mostly eaten on the Sunday now known as Fastelavn, but traditionally the sweets were for White Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. You can find many recepies for "traditional" Fastelavnboller. But the most popular one are cream filled and topped with chocolate. Many families will involve their children in baking and decorating the buns, but of course eating them is the most fun part. In Sweden they are called Semlor.

Smashing the Barrel?
The one tradition that has thrived through the years is “knocking the cat out of the barrel,” a game played in schools, day care institutions and around homes. Like a pinata, a barrel is hung and youngsters try to smash it with a bat. When they do, a pile of sweets fall out. In the old days, a live cat was used, preferably black as a symbol of evil.
