Join the DWMC as we celebrate 101 years of the 19th Amendment with Dr. Bettina Aptheker, Distinguished Professor of Feminist Studies, UCSC. From the Women’s Rights Convention in 1848 until the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920, women campaigned vigorously, courageously and with growing confidence for the right to vote against seemingly insurmountable odds. Women's suffrage was always intertwined with struggles against racism, white supremacy, lynching, settler colonialism, and anti-immigrant insularity. The victory of 1920 resonates today as we struggled to expand voting rights for all citizens for the 2020 Presidential election and consequently faced the most egregious and outright voter suppression effort in modern history.
