10 Women of Hope Inc

The 10 Women of Hope organization is thrilled to partner with Attorney Ben Smith for the “MBA 2018 Splash Charity Event” The 10 Women of Hope, Inc. has existed 11 years and has been successful in helping close to 1000 singled headed households with an urgent need so that they could continue to work and be stable. Thanks to the community support, this help has occurred without a paid staff member or any building expenses. The organization runs smoothly with the “workings” of 10 dedicated, strong women: Angie Davis, Linda Palmer, Wanda Callahan, Lamuriel Adams, Laurel Kovach, Jean Hawkins, Patsy Bryan, Penny Warren,Michelle Sams and Jacki Payne. Two of our founders are in emeritus status and they are Fran Sutton and Carla Brown. We are proud of our unique organization and feel we have prevented homelessness and loss of employment.

We chose Ben Smith for several reasons:

He is a hero in the community by serving in the past as Cobb’s Solicitor General and Cobb’s District Attorney

He is a hero because he played football at Marietta High School from 1972-76 and was a “stand out”. His love for Marietta High football has continued as he has served for years as Chair of the Marietta Touchdown Club.

When the 10 Women of Hope was formed in 2007, we were not quite ready for service when Ben’s mother, Harriett Smith, former Cobb County Commissioner called one of the “10” and gave us our first case——-a widow who had two jobs, 3 teens and a broken refrigerator. The 10 Women of Hope’s first case was buying this mom a refrigerator.

Ben Smith was honored to represent us but showing a humble heart, he suggested being our hero by honoring two former Marietta High Football coaches——-Coach Ben Wilkins and “Coach Friday” James Richards. Ben Wilkins coached at the segregated Lemon Street High School before moving to Marietta High School following integration.”Coach Friday” Richards graduated from Marietta High School in 1972 and entered the University of Florida, where he was a fullback on the Gator football team from 1972 to 1976.

He was drafted by the New York Jets and spent two years in the National Football League, before returning to Marietta to be an assistant football coach at his alma mater.

For 15 years, from 1995 until his retirement in 2009, Richards was head coach of the Blue Devils, amassing a record of 108-57, appearing in 10 playoffs, winning four region championships, and sending more than 100 players to college on football scholarships.

The 10 Women of Hope serves the Marietta School system families and we love our partnership with the city school social workers.

We are so excited about the “MBA 2018 Splash Charity Event” on August 16 th at Six Flags/White Water. Thanks for your support and check out our website at www.10womenofhope.org
