ZBT to honor Dr. Stephen Joel Trachtenberg with Man of the Year Award
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — Zeta Beta Tau is pleased to announce that Dr. Stephen Joel Trachtenberg has been named the 2016 Man of the Year for Zeta Beta Tau, the world’s first Jewish fraternity. Brother Trachtenberg, Delta (Columbia University) ’59, President Emeritus of The George Washington University, will be honored at Zeta Beta Tau’s 2016 International Convention in Atlanta, Georgia. |
| “I’m honored to receive this award; it is a symbol of my commitment to the world of higher education, Columbia College and, of course, to Zeta Beta Tau,” Dr. Trachtenberg said. "I joined Columbia’s chapter of ZBT in 1956 and am friends with many of my Delta brothers to this day, 60 years later. That is a powerful legacy that speaks to the importance of the fraternity in my life and in the power of friendship. While in college ZBT provided camaraderie with an interesting group of men, gave me an understanding of social responsibility and public service, along with a sense of fellowship and kindred spirit. |

Dr. Trachtenberg served as the 15th president of The George Washington University for nearly two decades, from 1988 to 2007. He previously was president of the University of Hartford for 11 years. Before assuming the presidency of Hartford, Brother Trachtenberg served for eight years at Boston University as vice president for academic services and academic dean of the College of Liberal Arts. Earlier, in Washington, D.C., he was a special assistant for two years to the U.S. Education Commissioner, Department of Health, Education and Welfare. He has been an attorney with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and a legislative aide to former Indiana Congressman John Brademas.
ZBT's Man of the Year award honors those brothers who stand forth above other brothers and fellow citizens in living the Credo and honoring ZBT's Ritual from a position of leadership and service. These brothers serve as role models for members of Zeta Beta Tau and American society in general.
"Few brothers exemplify the teachings of the ZBT Credo as thoroughly as Brother Dr. Stephen Joel Trachtenberg," said ZBT International President Matthew J. Rubins, Kappa (Cornell University) '90. "It is truly the honor of the Fraternity to celebrate the spirit of innovation in higher education and the devotion to public service championed by Dr. Trachtenberg."
