ZBT to honor former Atlanta Mayor
Sam Massell as 2016 Man of Distinction

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — Former Atlanta Mayor Sam Massell has been named the 2016 Man of Distinction for Zeta Beta Tau, the world’s first Jewish fraternity. Brother Massell, Mu (University of Georgia) ’48, will be honored at Zeta Beta Tau’s 2016 International Convention in Atlanta, Georgia.

“One only needs to consider the source to realize how honored I am to be selected for this recognition. I’ll strive to live up to its title,” Brother Massell said.

Join ZBT in honoring Brother Massell at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 23, 2016, at Zeta Beta Tau’s Grand Awards Banquet at 2016 International Convention. Learn more about the event and how to register at zbt.org/atlanta.

ZBT's Man of Distinction Award was created to honor those brothers who reach the apex of their various involvements. These men, through their life's work, exemplify the teachings of Zeta Beta Tau's Ritual and the commitment they make, as brothers of ZBT, to better the communities in which they live.

“When you look up the definition of ‘Man of Distinction,’ you should find a picture of Sam Massell. Sam exemplifies leadership, commitment, and involvement. Atlanta saw unbelievable growth during his time as mayor. He has set new standards for accomplishment as head of the Buckhead Coalition,” said Zeta Beta Tau Foundation President Bruce H. Weinstein, Psi (University of Alabama) ’70. “The amazing thing about Sam is how available he is to lend anyone a helping hand. He is the ultimate mentor, and he has been my role model, as well for others, since I have lived in Atlanta. While this deserving award honors Sam, Sam also honors ZBT by being a true brother.”

Brother Massell, a lifelong resident of Atlanta, has had successful careers in real estate brokerage, tourism and association management. He served 22 years in elected offices, including eight as President of Atlanta's Board of Aldermen (now known as the City Council) and four as the city's Mayor. He was the first Jew to serve as Mayor of Atlanta. He spearheaded growth in transit and tourism areas as well as minority opportunities in city government.

He now manages a nonprofit civic organization as the 1988 founding President of the Buckhead Coalition, an association that looks to nurture the quality of life and guide the orderly growth of the north-side neighborhood, Buckhead. ZBT’s 2016 International Convention will be hosted in Buckhead at the Grand Hyatt.

“Brother Massell is the epitome of all that a ZBT should be and very deserving of this recognition,” said International President Matthew J. Rubins, Kappa (Cornell University) ’90. “Atlanta is a better place for his leadership.”

Gifts in honor of Brother Massell’s recognition may be made to the Zeta Beta Tau Foundation’s Mu Chapter (Georgia) Chapter Specific fund via zbt.org/donate. Learn more about the Zeta Beta Tau Foundation at zbt.org/foundation.
